I’m sorry. 10 years old — that’s like 4th grade. There should be no way a 10-year-old wouldn’t know about 911.
If the house had a phone, the kid should have called the police, or the fire services.
If the house caught fire, would the kid have spent 10 days trying to put it out himself?
Truly strange. Nice of the boy, but wouldn’t you think he’d think at least about hospitals and taxis? Maybe a phone book to call relevant help?
My thoughts exactly! The article makes the kid appear dumb as a rock, smart enough to give his Dad food and water but not smart enough to get help. Damn even Lassie knew how to get help when Timmy fell down the well!
Mother is in Africa? Sounds like illegals or at least foreigners. May be why kid didn’t contact anyone.

Here in Seattle we import a lot of Somalis. Apparently they are not illegal since they are brought in, given discounted housing and do not speak English.
Probably the boy does not speak English and can only attend school because, like here, maybe they have 51 languages going in the public schools.
The mother is probably waiting for her green card before she can arrive.
The whole situation is very sad. For us as the public and for this family.

Reminds me of the Somali immigrants in San Diego who fired up a hibatchi on the wood floor of their apartment and burned the joint down. Apparently they are not given instruction in Civilization 101 before they emigrated.
They have an “absent hotline” or something in our school systems. If you don’t call ahead saying your child is sick that day and they don’t show up for the first period attendance you get a call right away to check on them.
Not sure what happens if they can’t get ahold of anyone. Although I DO know in our town they want you to call 911 if you see ANYTHING is suspicious, so I imagine they would have a squad car swing by.
