'Gallon Smashing' Comes to the North Shore — The Stupidest Teen Prank Ever?
Danvers (MA) Patch ^ | 3/6/13 | Chris Helms

Four girls went "gallon smashing" at the Shaw's in Salem in Monday. How do you rate this in the annals of stupid teen pranks? (with video--which was not filmed at that market)

In an evolutionary sense, we owe a lot to the adolescents of the species. The unnecessary risks they take helped our ancestors learn important lessons — like which plants were poisonous.

But Monday in Salem there was an example of juvenile behavior for which I'm hard pressed to see the advantage.

"Gallon smashing" is, well, just take a look at the YouTube video attached to this post.

People go into supermarkets and film themselves pretending to fall while smashing one or two gallons of milk.

On Monday, Salem police responded to a "gallon smashing incident" at Shaw's. You can get the details from Salem Patch.

This left me wondering where, on the scale of teen stupidity, this new trend rates. I suppose it's safer than swerving your car on purpose to make oncoming drivers get out of the way or obscuring a stop sign on purpose and causing a fatal wreck.

But it's more dangerous than my favorite prank as a teen: Fireworking teachers' houses.

How do you rate "gallon smashing" among teen pranks?

Cleanup on aisle 3. From Salem (MA) Patch:

You may not have heard of gallon smashing but if you take a look at the Youtube video attached to this post, you'll know pretty much all there is to know.

Gallon-smashing is a new viral video trend that is sweeping the internet, where people go into supermarkets and film themselves pretending to fall while smashing one or two gallons of milk.

At 11:01 a.m. Monday, Salem police responded to a "gallon smashing incident" at the Shaw's Supermarket on Traders Way.

A loss prevention manager told responding officers that four girls were recorded on the market's surveillance cameras entering the store, heading for the dairy section and grabbing a couple of gallons of milk.

One of the girls reportedly smashed two milk gallons in one of the aisles and pretended to slip and fall in the milk while one of her friends filmed the whole thing with her cell phone.

The loss prevention manager turned surveillance footage of the incident over to police in the hopes that still images can be pulled for identification purposes.

What do you think of this new "gallon-smashing" trend?

All kids should be locked up when they are 13 and not released until they are 29. Maybe 35. I know I should have been. Unfortunately....

Buttholes all.

Back in the 80s was up at my hunting camp for our(friends and I) annual deer hunting trip. We hit the local supermarket and loading up the vehicle I placed a gallon of milk on the car roof so as to free a hand for packing. SPLAT it hits the ground and ruptures. Old Dave started 8itching and moaning about it. I let him finish whining and slowly said “No use cryin’ over it”. Everyone cracked up. It became the annual catch phrase for the season.
I believe I shot a meat doe that trip

I vaguely remember some of the stupid things I did as a child but vividly remember the ass-beatings I got from my father for them, for which I am eternally grateful Dad, wherever you are looking down from above.

some comments from the facebook of the related Peabody Patch:

—Stupid, stupid kids. So...what is the consequence they face?
If it were my daughter (and she is stupid enough to do it) I’d start by making her pay for damages then 90 days of mopping that store’s floor without pay along with empathy training with people who suffer from spinal injuries. And grounding...zero trust for letting her out unsupervised for a long time.

— This happened at Shaw’s Market in Salem the other day.

—So, what happens when the flying gallon of milk bounces off the wall and hits an elderly person or a child and seriously hurts them? These kids are idiots.

—if I was still in the grocery business and they did this now knowing what is up, off the the receiving area with them for a good old fashion ass whoopin.

— A friend just witnessed this recently.

She works at Shaw’s and rushed to help the person, concerned he had gotten hurt.

— They should bring a gallon of milk to the food shelter/homeless people.. THAT should be on the news instead.

Pretty much every grocery store of this size around the Eastern MA area has video cameras on every aisle. Just call the cops while assisting the little reprobates off the floor and getting them cleaned up. Escort them to the manager’s office and then review the tape, arrest them while they make arrangements for restitution.

Out & out vandalism is not a “prank”...any more than putting “pranksters” in public stocks for an afternoon’s worth of citizen entertainment is a “prank”.

Mislabeling it as such is a disservice to all in involved, including the English language; and it just encourages more of the same.

A prank is short-sheeting your buddy, or putting sugar in the salt shaker of a sourpuss...not that I have ever never ever even considered doing such a thing.

Sorry, you are wrong. The gene pool needs to be cleansed.

These “children” will not amount to anything. Maybe some would but it is not worth the risk to wait to see.

Pretty soon you’ll have to ask the cashier for a gallon of milk because they will be behind the counter with cigarettes and cold medicine.

Kids are stupid but this takes the cake...(with milk)

There are actual customers shopping in the video, it couldn’t have been filmed at a Shaw’s.

They get to show their hatred for capitalism by destroying some of the store’s assets without paying for it. They get sympathy from the idiots who run to their assistance. And they get to sue the store for not cleaning up the milk that they deliberately threw on the floor and that they slipped on.

Also, because they are useless pieces of $h!t, they get enjoyment out of the whole thing and chuckles from their fellow $h!tholes who view the videos.

So are you saying that the appropriate response to a teenager stealing and then destroying $4 of food is either death or sterilization?

Video cams: around late 85, early 86, I was a department manager at the Swampscott, MA Bradlees, a now defunct dept store chain (at Bradlees you buy what Mrs B buys, and nobody can buy like Mrs B). Part of my training was sitting with the head of security in his little office and showing how they dealt with shoplifters. A woman was brought in and a policeman was there writing her up, etc.; her kids were nearby. They had been observed shoplifting by the cameras...

...stuffing merch into their clothes or whatever... The pinch had been made and when she started to cry about being hauled off to the police station (I’m a little fuzzy on this), “what about my children?” she was told “you shoulda thought about that before you shoplifted”. Maybe she wasn’t being hauled off to the police station, maybe to an area just outside the store...again this was awhile ago.

At a slower moment, the security guy showed how he recorded off one camera, hit pause, and the customer “disappeared”
because he resumed recording and they’d moved away. It was kinda like the special effect they used on Bewitched.

As Mark Twain wisely advised, “When a child turns 12, put him in a barrel, nail down the lid and feed him through a knot hole. When he turns 16, plug the hole.”

The YouTube craze has only made the opportunity for adolescent idiocy worse.

And it’s not a prank. Calling it a prank dismisses it and gives the criminals permission to keep doing it.

Do they prosecute “flash robs?”
