Girl recovering after being attacked by pack of Chihuahuas

SALEM, OR (KPTV) - A 6-year-old girl is recovering after she was attacked by a pack of Chihuahuas in Salem.

The attack happened Wednesday night on 17th Street Northeast near Nebraska Street, according to Salem police.

The girl was taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK.

Four of the Chihuahuas are now at the Marion County Animal Shelter under a 10-day quarantine. Once that is finished, a veterinarian will evaluate each dog for either adoption or euthanasia.

William Van Aken, the victim's father, said he and his daughter were on a walk to her school.

"We were only two blocks from the school when the five dogs just ran up barking and they ran straight after her and I thought they were just going to come up to us and back off, but the biggest one jumped up and bit her in the shoulder," he said.

A school crossing guard who was nearby chased the dogs away.

Neighbors said the Chihuahuas would routinely get loose from their yard and roam the streets.

"They actually tried to come at me and bite me but I was with my dog and he started barking at them," said neighbor Ryan Cade.

Since no one could say which dog out of the pack actually bit the girl, all but the quietest one were confiscated.

"It was bound to happen," said neighbor Barbara Gault. "We've seen them chasing after people all the time."

The dogs' owner told FOX 12 that children in the neighborhood often let the dogs out. He also said he understood it was time to give them up.

Just because chihuahuas don’t like you doesn’t mean that they are wrong. Some animals can just sense evil.

They may be small, but they are horrible, nasty, vicious little things.

Got bit by one as a kid. Got bit by a cocker spaniel too. Another over-rated dog.

Are there any good tempered chihuahuas?

I did know someone who had a long-haired one. Sweetest, nicest little dog. We joked about how the dog aced like it was on valium cause it was so calm. Would fall asleep on the owner lap all the time

But he was an exception.

Years ago, I was bit in the face by a friend’s pet Chihuahua. Nasty little things.

Boy, oh boy....

Thank God that my daughter had the good sense and judgement to marry a real man! If she would have brought something like this home, I would have had to smack her!

What kind of father needs a crossing guard to rescue his little girl from chihuahuas.

Perhaps a handicapped father. Maybe a war veteran. Let’s not rush to judgement here.

I think “punters” is the term you are searching for.

When circulation is low, every dog is a pit bull.

I have a soft spot for Cockers. When I was a baby, a stray German Shepard stuck its head into my stroller. My mom’s Cocker sent it running after taking a hunk of fur out of its throat.

Years ago, while hunting doves on the Colorado Indian Reservation along the Colorado River in Arizona, I spotted a pack of about 15—20 Chihauhuas out on their evening hunt at sunset! The area was thick with feral Chihuahuas.....all living off the desert land full of quail, and rabbits.

Three dogs or more = a pack.

They will without fail display pack behavior.

Their ‘pack leader’ needs his/her ass kicked.

I told this story once before, but it is worth repeating. I once had a Ford F150 truck, and I'd drive down this dirt driveway to a country road every morning. One day I noticed this small thing spring out of the bushes near the end of the driveway and attack the front tire. It was incredibly vicious, and looked like a big hairless rat on steroids with dozens of tiny sharp teeth gnashing together furiously. It attacked the truck twice a day, and no matter how fast I was going it would fling itself at the front tire. It took a while, but eventually I figured out it was a feral chihuahua. Had I ever gotten out of the truck, it would have taken my feet off at the ankles like a buzz saw.

I think it’s the owner who needs his ass kicked, but that’s just me.

They’d better watch out for the cat-herders.

An AR15 would work just as well.

They're hard to hit, you're gonna need that 30-round magazine.

They should test those dogs for rabies.

The Vet probably never thought of that.

Perhaps you should give him a call and save the day.
