Writers are sometimes stern and cold at heartintroverts who escape into their own solitary world, away from outward distractions that would somehow muddle their extraordinary work. Other times, writers just need a friend. And while they say that a dog is a man's best friend, these writers each found solace in another four-legged companion.

If you can breed your own pet cats from a strain that does not trigger your allergies, there is no reason to stop.
I’m not going to take in any more kittens. I can’t promise them “forever” anymore. Mature or elderly cats would be all right, but I don’t have 15-20 years anymore.
Very nice. You always find the neatest stuff.
I’m not allergic to cats but that does sound like a good idea. None of my cats are breeders, though; all three are spayed females.
So true.
The other day there was a beautiful gray cat on the deck. He lives across the road and wears a collar. I went out and started talking to him, and he came to me and rolled over on his back, and I had the happiest time, just petting him, scratching his belly and under his chin.
He followed me into the garage, carefully investigated everything, and then sat down near me with his tail wrapped around his feet. Every now and then he would come over for some more petting. Finally he walked out, went around the house and sat on the front steps, where he watched the road for a while. And then he went home.
Cats are such deliberate animals. You can almost see the wheels turning in their little heads as they sit, watching and weighing things. We don't have a cat at the moment, so every encounter with one is a pleasure for me.
Very nice. Thanks Catherine.
I came very close to acquiring a fourth cat recently. A little calico showed up where I work last Thursday. We have one or two ferals living on the property already.
This calico probably belonged to someone at some point; although she initially wouldn’t approach any of us she would meow at us and eventually started following a couple of the yard guys around. In general she was friendly with people and she LOVED being petted.
When I came back to work Monday she was still here (I had taken Friday off). I brought her into the office, gave her some food, and then dropped her off at a shelter on my way home. I would have loved to take her, but I really don’t want a fourth cat right now! Besides, she appeared to be hurt, and those of you who know much about cat behavior know if you can see a cat is hurt it is probably pretty badly injured.
I sure hope she finds a good home.
I love this ping list. I know there’s always a place where other cat people will “get it.” :)
I hope she does, too. What a little heartbreaker. Maybe her sweet temperament will go along way toward helping her find a home.
A cat became Pope?! Why didn’t someone ping me?
That is a lovely image. Again! You find the best stuff.
Always good to be reminded.
Beautiful poem, beautiful kitty.
Thank you - I love running this list.
And by the finest literary minds, too.

Me too
LOL, that is good.
I’M KRAZY FOR KATZ - me.
That’s great, thanks for posting it.
I second that emotion.
It’s a very good article, I’m struck by how many of the cats are black cats.
We have a black cat now (and her beautiful but totally hopeless gray sister). I always wanted one and she is really cool.
I know that some folks still don’t like a black cat, but I’ve also read that they are really sweet. Which our Niki is.
It makes me wonder if they’ve developed into sweeties because they are, excuse the expression, underdogs.
And another author who should be included is of course Christopher Smart and his cat, Jeoffry.
