(WTNH) -- Doctors from BluePearl Veterinary Partners are urging people to stop using and return or discard certain bags of cat food manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods after the company issued a voluntary recall affecting 25 states.

Below is a press release from BluePearl Veterinary Partners:

According to a press release issued by Diamond Pet Foods, the company is recalling certain bags of Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Senior Cat Hairball Management Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Kitten Formula dry cat food, Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula dry cat food and 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula dry cat food after tests conducted by the company indicated the products might have a low level of thiamine (Vitamin B1).

Thiamine is an essential vitamin for cats in maintaining normal nervous system function. Symptoms of thiamine deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurological signs can develop, which may include cervical ventroflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, ataxia (wobbly walking), falling, circling and seizures.

Altogether, the products were distributed to customers located in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

People who have the recalled products should return or discard them immediately.

"If you have fed your cat with the affected product and notice your cat is not acting right, take him or her to your family veterinarian as soon as possible," said Dr. Laura Gibeon, a senior clinician with BluePearl in Manhattan. "Of course, if it is an after-hours emergency, we would be glad to help at any one of our locations."

why pray tell all the fruits and veggies on the bag - cats are carnivores. I would never buy any food for my kitties that tout stuff they don’t need or want just to make me think it’s “balanced.” Makes me want to head back to my raw food recipe.

My two demand albacore tuna at least twice a week. If they don’t get it they trash a houseplant.

Ask me if I care. My cat eats Crunchy Yuckies, cheap cat food that comes in a flat green box and costs a buck fifty. And he’s glad to get it, fat moocher that he is. Occasionally I buy him little flat cans of expensive cat food. We call that “cat candy”.

on the one hand, I’m LOLing over your comment, and on the other, I’m wondering where I can get Crunchy Yuckies for my cats?
I feed ours Kit&Kaboodle which is pretty much the cheapest non-garbage dry food. I do mix it with the “diet” aka indoor cat food they don’t like as much, mostly so they don’t make pigs of themselves.

...notice your cat is not acting right...”

I dare anyone try to tell my cat how she is supposed to act. Take her to the Vet? I tried two different ones when it was time for shots and both times was asked to take her somewhere else.

Cats: Nature’s Cutest Extortionists.

They really do this. Most of the time they barely tolerate each other, but when tuna time rolls around they become fast allies. They also call a truce when it's time for their evening sleep.

One of my cats will eat nothing but Purina Cat Chow Indoor Formula. We tried giving her some store brand food that looks very similar and she wouldn’t touch it.

The other two would have canned food morning, noon and night if we let them.

Nearly all dry cat food is rotgut material since kittehs are obligate carivores, and dry foods use some kind of cereal grain to bind together the food bits.

Cats just cannot process starch the way dogs and people can.

Feeding a meat-based diet --a quality canned food-- is a matter of paying now or paying later. If you ever have to deal with a diabetic cat, those heavy-on-corn cat foods won't look so cheap any longer.
