When I was in Egypt, I saw graffiti carved into temples, usually just a name and a date — everything from French soldiers in the early 1800s to Englishmen making the grand tour in the 1920s.

The comments at the link are hilarious. Low information/perpetually outraged morons and their 'holier than thou' babble.
None of the world famous ancient civilizations (not a single one) have been protected, cherished, studied and deciphered by the locals. Those imperialist Europeans and other 'westerners' have done all of the heavy lifting, preservation and understanding.
The locals always destroy what is "theirs." Steal it apart, destroy it or just wantonly dismantle it. The Elgin Marbles were being ground up for mortar when Lord Elgin purchased what was left of them.
The only ancient temples, monuments and grand architectural wonders still preserved today exist only because the locals either didn't know they were there, or required too much work and effort to destroy them for other purposes.
