Is global warming causing harsher winters?

Millions of people in northern Europe are still battling snow and ice, wondering why they are being punished with bitter cold when - officially - spring has arrived and Earth is in the grip of global warming.

Yet some scientists, eyeing the fourth year in a row of exceptionally harsh late-winter weather in parts of Europe and North America, suggest warming is precisely the problem.

In a complex tango between ocean and atmosphere, warming is causing icy polar air to be displaced southwards, they contend.

“The linkage is becoming clearer and clearer, I think, although the science has not yet been settled,” said Dim Coumou of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) near Berlin.

Warm globally, cool locally!

I long ago realized that a key trait of “Liberals, Progressives, Communists” etc. Is that they have absolutely no problem in changing the meaning of words to suit their agendas.

Yes, and when London was so entrenched with harsh winters in medieval times that they actually held FAIRS on the frozen RIVER Thames, it was those stinking factories and cars that was the cause!

Their models cannot predict what they see happening but they can manipulate the data (and the media) to produce the desired result - more government control over you. They settled that part a long time ago.

According to physics, because global warming lowers the differences between any two areas, there should be less storms and those storms should be less severe.

Not between any two areas, but between average tropical and average arctic conditions.

In the standard global warming scenario, the arctic gets much warmer, particularly at night, while the tropics remain about the same as now.

As you say, this reduces the delta-T between these two regions, which is the primary driver of world weather. Just not the only one.

The solar maximum has not happened. The Pacific Decadal oscillation is in a negative (cold) phase and the Atlantic oscillation is trending down from its warm phase and possibly headed into a cold period. If the three cycles maintain their present states we will experience some deep cooling over the next decade(s)!

Is global warming causing harsher winters?

The same way gravity is causing people to fall up. Yes, indeed...

Today, Good Friday, a day that signifies the hanging of Jesus for man's sins and more lefties believe in global warming than the miracle of Easter.

They are banning the Easter bunny, the Easter bunny?

Wow, there is a religious figure that needs to be banned.

Liberalism is truly a mental disease.

This reminds me of the twisted, convoluted paths astronomers once used to chart the orbits of the planets when they were sure everything revolved around the earth. We’ll make it fit!

Up is down
Black is white
Right is wrong
Evil is good; good is evil

The twisting world of the Left.

Yes, global warming causes more severe winters. And if we spend more money, we'll balance the budget.

Not only harsher - longer too....Taken to its final ends, global warming will turn the Earth into a frozen wasteland. (is a /s needed?)

Of course they're serious. There's only so much warmth to go around. If we use it all up when things are warmer than usual there's less warmth to use later, so it gets colder than usual.

Maybe I should try to get a government grant. /sarc

Your Calender may show 2013 but we are living 1984...

In Today's America (A.K.A. The Obamanation) when facts don't back up your claims you just change the parameters to fit your assertions, just like the Ministry of Truth.

"I thought the debate was over?"

No the science WAS settled until AlGore (A.K.A. ManBearPig) sold his "green" Cable Channel, "Current" to one of the Biggest of Big Oil.

Now the Science can be debated all over again so we can start a whole new run-up for some "Enviro Robber Barons" to make another great pile of cash!

You are obviously not a scientist, it’s so simple.

The sequester is causing global warming which means everyone that doesn’t freeze to death is going to be killed by an asteroid.

It’s Bush’s fault so we have to take away everyone’s gun and raise taxes on the rich to stop it.

The Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming (CAGW) theory just has to be one of the most robust scientific theories ever proposed. Any observed weather, anywhere, is proof of CAGW.

Mindburgler,
Do you know what the “CC” in IPCC stands for? This is an organization that has been with us since the 80’s

And are you also aware that the Arctic is currently melting even if you, personally, are cold?

Global warming and climate change are 2 sides of the same coin and both terms that have been with us for decades — global warming is the cause and climate change is the result.

That’s fine. Scientific knowledge is to be shared.

You might want to think about buying yourself a boat so you don’t drown during the great flood that’s going to turn the entire country into a giant desert and dustbowl.
