'Actor Richard Griffiths, who starred in the Harry Potter films and Withnail and I, has died at the age of 65 after complications following heart surgery.
Griffiths enjoyed a long career of success on film and on TV, but also on the stage where he was a Tony-winning character actor.
TV roles included a cookery-loving detective in Pie in the Sky.
He was best known for playing Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films and Uncle Monty in Withnail and I.
His Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe - who also appeared on stage with him in Equus - was among the first to pay tribute, saying: "Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career. I was proud to know him.
"Any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence," he said.'

I am fond of BBC/British detective and mystery shows. Many if not most of the Pie in The Sky series are on youtube, and pretty good to boot! He did an interesting job in them to not be the wham bam style detective. The Lovejoy Mysteries are still my favorites though ...
“The Lovejoy Mysteries are still my favorites though “
Mine too! When I was younger, I was a furniture restorer, so I could identify with that show. Are they re-running them?
I don’t know. I have them all on discs and re-watch them periodically. I still have a crush on Lady Felsham ... no really! She reminds me so much of my first wife.
RIP.
Loved him in Withnail and I. Saw him twice in London on stage and once in NYC. Had dinner with him and a group of people on two occasions. Great actor, nice man.
Harry Potter Ping
I used to get him and Peter Ustinov mixed up...
Was he Harry’s muggle parent?
He was his uncle Vernon.
Ahh, thank you.
He looks familiar. Was he in “Saturday the 14th”?
One of his parents was muggloid— I think it was his mothers side, hence the muggle-uncle.
Same here; have all seasons on dvd. Rather different than the books, though.
Harry Potter is most definitely NOT muggle-born. He is a pureblood wizard. His (witch) mother had a muggle sister, who, sadly for Harry, married Vernon Dursley.
Ok, I’ll settle for 50$ to keep this quiet!
