Discovery (channel) Renews 'Sons of Guns' for Fourth Season
Hollywood Reporter ^ | 3/29/13 | Kimberly Nordyke

Discovery Channel has given a fourth season to its reality show Sons of Guns.

The show -- which centers on Red Jacket Firearms, a custom gun-making company in Louisiana -- is set to return at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Friday, April 19.

Will Hayden, his daughter Stephanie, Joe, Kris, Charlie, Flem and the rest of Red Jacket staff are returning for season four, which will see the crew handling major firepower, including a rare handheld WWII PIAT, a Russian cannon and a M36 tank.

Meanwhile, Vince, a former employee, resurfaces, and his reappearance as a possible competitor could spell trouble for Red Jacket. The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive look at the premiere.

Sons of Guns and other shows including History's Top Shot and National Geographic's Doomsday Preppers came under scrutiny in the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., in December.

A similarly themed series on Discovery, American Guns, was canceled months earlier, mostly because of its ratings performance.

I do respect that Will is trying to do everything he can to prevent his family turning into the Teutels from American Chopper.

But the Hollywood-esque explosions and cheesy soap opera personal drama have rendered it unwatchable. The crap with Vince is just irritating. Just send him packing and get another gunsmith who isn’t a drama queen. There are plenty of skilled professionals around to fill his shoes without causing hate and discontent.

Lastly, I disagree with them making fully automatic weapons and grenade launchers for LEOs. We have too many para-militarized cops already.

I have to disagree with you on that. If criminals have full rock and roll weapons, then the police should match. And the grenade launchers were to be primarily used for tear gas.

As far as Vince... yeah it steered away from the subject of guns (just like the drama of Stephanie and Kris seeing each other). But I have to admit, I was anxious to tune back in to see what was happening with Vince. I am sure the producers knew that and I am sure I wasn’t alone. The producers would have put a dancing chicken on the screen if they thought it would bring ratings. Just like many viewers were tuning in to see the drama between Paul and Paul Teutel JR.

“” There are plenty of skilled professionals around to fill his shoes without causing hate and discontent”””

I agree. But thats boring television.
Actually, I think Will owed Vince and Vince felt he was owed more because for a while the company was riding on Vince’s FFL. Will had lost his FFL and was doing business on Vince’s. But yeah, Vince is a drama queen.

I see where the producers mentioned that Vince could possibly be competition for them this season. That is unnecessary for the subject matter but that is producers of a TV show doing what they do best.

Mmmmmmm, good. I have a bottle of that, Grey Flannel, Old Spice and Agua Lavanda Puig, too, as back-ups.

I don’t see how someone that is horrible at what they do can have a succesful business.

Are you familiar with who a television producer is and what they do? The business you see on the show may very well be "provided" by the producer. They want something exciting to show and they have a narrative to tell. Producers seed the crop they want to reap. Whether it is Pawn Stars or some auction show, remember its being produced for entertainment and the producer is going to ensure that interesting things happen.

Secondly, I see lots of businesses that are very good at self-promotion, so they are capable of bringing in a larger than average share of first time business. However, their actual work is below par and they get very little repeat business. After a while, business dries up and they start something new and repeat the cycle.

I've never seen them put out any truly quality work on the show, but I'll admit that I quit watching after a few episodes.

If you watch it and enjoy it, power to you. Its just a TV show. Each to his own tastes.

They not only stay in business but THRIVE.

What percentage of that revenue would you say is coming from the TV show? If it is the show as I imagine, then what business are they in? I didn't say they were bad at the reality star gig.

well i may be picky about reporters but i suspect it’s a soviet cannon unless it’s post ‘91 and an M36 is not a tank.
may be feeling petulant today.

Have you seen Wild West Alaska. ? (The gun shop’s name is Wild West)

On Animal Planet !!! Almost identical to American Guns, with hunting thrown in.

Yeah, I know what you’re gonna say, YES Animal Planet.

Just checked, last week was the last show of the season.
Might check reruns, or APL channel videos.
