The Walking Dead comes to a surprising conclusion in Sunday nights Season 3 finale. [Spoiler warning.]...I wont lie: I was hoping for the big, dramatic showdown between Rick and the Governor. Instead, The Walking Deads Season 3 finale ended on a mixed note, part tragic and part hopeful.
As a season finale, Im not sure this works. The last five or six episodes of the show have been all about rising tension. The drama, the stakes of the game, the whole arms race between Woodbury and the prison, all of it has built up to a breaking point, spilling over last week with Merles suicide run against the Governor and his men.
The problem with the Season 3 finale is two-fold: First, Merles sacrifice is rendered pointless now that the Governor has gone and killed off basically his own entire army.
Second, none of the massive amount of tension thats built up over the course of the season has been released or resolved...........
But what we have instead is a conscious decision to carry the existing conflict between the Governor and the prison forward. Why? For lack of a better villain? To flesh out the dwindling ranks of the survivors with a busload of new characters? New extras to feed to the walkers?
None of these questions result in satisfying answers. Fundamentally, this is a business decision, and sometimes business decisions are terrible for creative endeavors.
Many moments in this episode were great. The opening scene between the Governor and Milton, especially. Carls internal conflict and anger over Ricks betrayal of Michonne........"

I'm assuming that Andrea had only one bullet in the wheel, and had the presence of mind to empty that one casing, by snapping the wheel open, after she got done blowing her brains out.
You know, just a courtesy thing, so Rick didn't have to.
I don’t think he’s right. Merle’s attack definitely paid off, he took out the Governor’s seasoned fighters who wouldn’t have turned tail to run during the ambush, the prison defense would have failed if not for Merle.
And I think it’s good to not kill the Governor and bringing in the Woodbury people. I was actually thinking this season was going too fast, in the comics the Governor plot lasted 2 years, it had enough time for them to start growing crops in the prison yard, they actually looked like they were going to get a place to live. For the TV show the Governor conflict started right away, it didn’t have a lot of what made the prison interesting in the books. Now they’re setup to jump right into the good stuff of the prison AND the Governor is still a threat.
Why wait? Time is short in the zombie apocalypse. BTW, the actress Emily Kinney, is over 21...
I hadn’t thought about that group. He’s definitely turned into a leader for a group of marauders now. I think you’ve got a good guess there.
Thinkin' of the collective to the bitter end...
She just couldn’t shake her liberalism, and in the end, it killed her.
glad andrea is gone. thought it was a good ironic touch that he used Milton to do it. though she had her feet free, she could have kicked milton back a few times to finish freeing her other hand. if her legs worked wel enough to get the pliers they could have kicked a less than agile walker back a few times.
almost all of the others from woodbury == red shirts /star-trek
“The Talking Dead had the evening poll of whether Carl should have killed the kid or taken him in. The poll was split 50-50.”
Taking the kid prisoner would open up the same can of worms that the prisoner at the farm did. What do you do with him? He cant be trusted, he has to be locked up and taken care of.
the way the kid was handing over the weapon and eyeing carl’s pistol, they told him to put it down, not come closer and hand it over. don’t begrudge the call given he was prior shooting at them.
not merely discarded, but now dead -hitchhikers’ backpack.
yup.
I suspect next season will see most of the group leaving the prison and the newcomers behind as they go out in search of a more substantial "safe" city where civilization is trying to make a come back ...
I've been wrong in virtually every episode prediction to date so there's no reason to believe I'll be right this time..........LOL!
It was classic Andrea behavior for her to waste time talking while she should have been doing something. And yes, she clearly found a curling iron and a nail salon still operating somewhere. Although to be fair, if I’d been the actress, I would have told the writers they were not going to put me out there with clawed feet, LOL.
Good point about the Woodbury folks....that’s a busload of disposable redshirts.
may have thought why waste heavy stuff when not necessary to.
Agreed. Though it did set up some interesting S4 storylines.
This season seemed to be about choices and redemption. Merle redeemed himself in the eyes of the others and I fully expect Michone to tell the group what Merle did, if she hasn’t already. Then there’s the fate of dogooders Andrea and Milton, providing that in this new world, wanting and doing good won’t save you.
Interesting contrast between Merle’s fate and Andrea/Milton.
Carl is becoming Shane/Governor lite. Yikes.
wasn’t a revolver, rick gave her a semiauto.
