The Anne Hathaway Hatred Is Out of Control
Daily Beast ^ | 03/04/2013 | by Kevin Fallon

Is it her face? Her personality? Is she too perfect? Everyone wants to know why we hate Anne Hathaway. We want to know why they care so much.

Last time Anne Hathaway gave an acceptance speech after she won the best-supporting-actress Oscar for her performance in Les Misérables. You’d think she committed mass murder.

What began as the “cult of Hathahaters” two months ago has simmered, bubbled over, and formed a zeitgeist-seizing, rage-fueled movement against the actress, peaking with a series of think pieces examining what Hathaway has done to trigger such a response. As if it’s some major social or political question that must be answered—like how to prevent the sequester or who should be the next pope—these essays explore every facet of Anne’s very Anne-ness in an attempt to get to the root of the problem.

People are stronger in their convictions on the issue than they are on most platforms that determine presidential elections. Now a hatred has arisen that’s typically reserved for celebrities who go on anti-Semitic rants (hello, Mr. Gibson) or hit their girlfriends (bonjour, Mr. Brown). Hathaway, by comparison, gave some speeches that were kind of annoying. Forget media frenzy. It’s a media pile-on, and it’s out of control.

So what are we supposed to think about her?

“She’s got this theater-kid thing where she adopts the mood of every situation she’s in ... but wildly overcompensates every time,” writes The Atlantic Wire’s Richard Lawson. CNN quotes an oratory expert who tells us that Hathaway’s “just one of the people who just doesn’t come off as sincere.” The New Yorker’s Sasha Weiss posits that it’s because the actress appears too happy.

I don’t like he because of the hatchet job she did on Agent 99’s character in Get Smart.

Anne wishes she was Jennifer Lawrence. Jennifer as Mystique slaughtered Catwoman. And Katniss Everdeen is great. Plus, Jennifer just won best lead actress at the Oscars.
Anne comes off as snotty and insincere. Jennifer Lawrence is popular for being more real. Anne is having a conniption fit with a co star wearing a similar dress to the Oscars, and Jennifer Lawrence is talking about how she is klutz who hates to exercise. Anne comes off as very fake.

I think you’re smoking model airplane glue while huffing Ortho® wasp/hornet killer, but you’re entitled to your opinions.

Go see “Olympus has fallen”. Morgan plays the speaker of the house who is temporarily sworn in, and he has the president, played by Aaron Eckhardt telling him “Do not negotiate with terrorists!” And Freeman proceeds to buckle like a belt and to make the worst choices possible.

Where are the pics from the pre-fame porno phase of her career? (That’s the bread for our circuses!)

Sally Fields could fly and look cute even in close ups in that flying Numb thing. Anne may hath a way but she didn’t seem too happy in that Less Miserable movie. Probably because of everyone singing instead of just saying right out what’s bothering them.

Anne Hathaway wasn’t in The Princess Bride.

Check out “Love and Other Drugs”.

It is actually a pretty funny movie about the introduction of the drug Viagara.

What are you talking about? That’s what The Miserable was. She cut her hair, became a prostitute, sang a maudlin song extra mawkishly while weeping with snot all over her face, etc. I guess people can’t think of a musical as being raw, gritty, or ugly, but this was that. She won this years Ugliesfor falling somewhere between Theron’s unrecognizable grossness in Monster and Nichole Kidman’s slightly less pretty fake nose as Virginia Woolf.

I had the polar opposite reaction, which was embarrassment and inability to keep my eyes on the screen for the love of decency. It was sorta the same reaction I have to hardcore pornography when I’m in the mood for a peck on the cheek. She belongs in the overacting hall of fame.

Everyone wants to know why we hate Anne Hathaway

No we don't.

Frankly there is a vast majority of us who had no idea there even were people who apparently get joy from hating Anne Hathaway.

Sorry honey child but you are just not as interesting in the real world as you are in your own head.

Now run along and try not to slip in your own drool again.

People always seem to forget that the other side of instantaneous commentary and a worldwide platform is that everything we say is less important. If you can post in real time, so can millions of others, and if a guy in China can read your thoughts on Anne Hathaway, maybe the guy next door is reading something tweeted by a Chinaman on a completely different topic. And this only lasts for a second, usually. It’s always real time, and we’re always taking about something else. Who saves tweets and retreads them from weeks past? No one, unless they were considered newsworthy in themselves, which only means people are tweeting about them now, in the present present.

Which is why people pretend ti care about “trends.” Mostly it’s to sell us something ir other, but it’s also to keep track of what thoughts it is people are constantly shouting into the whirlwind, sometimes with minimal notice from the rest of humanity. If no particular thought counts for much, mountains of thoughts matter. So it must mean something if people in general are constantly badmouthing Anne Hathaway on the internet.

No, not really. It means less, certainly, than for instance if Johnny Carson had thrown in a joke a week about her. Because nothing in particular matters as much on the internet.
