Girl's 10-Week Hiccup Ordeal Baffles Doctors
The Telegraph ^ | 04 Apr 2013

Emily Marsh, 13, started hiccupping on her way to a maths lesson in January and has not stopped since.

The teenager from Wallington in Surrey hiccups every two seconds, including when she is asleep, and has had to take afternoons off school to rest because she is so exhausted.

She has undergone a series of tests, including an ultrasound scan, chest X-ray, endoscopy and MRI scan, but doctors have so far been unable to cure her condition. The schoolgirl has also tried osteopathy and hypnosis, as well as a variety of old wives' tale remedies – all to no avail.

"I have tried everything – even the spoonful of vinegar. That was horrible – I refused to do it again," she said.

The innermost part of the brain is complete, with a visual cortex and autonomic breathing mechanism appropriate for a tadpole type creature, but larger. It is not hooked into the conscious mind, but otherwise blind people can frequently “see” with the visual cortex. (They know something is there and avoid hitting it, without being able to describe it, for example.) If the breathing section of this brain gets activated, it breaths in a hiccup. There is no cure. You have to somehow override it. We’ve all done it at one time or another.

I swear by this trick. I used to get them all the time. My mom would take an electric cord with its end cut of and stripped back ,She would plug it in and then draw it across my sternum quickly. worked every time

Hiccups cure:

At the onset of hiccups: begin swallowing your saliva as fast as you can, as many times as you can.
This interferes with the frequency and regularity of the hiccups.

This works for me every time l do it. I’ve used it for the last 40 plus years and it never fails.

Vinegar works for me every time. I was given that solution by a doc that explained hiccups was a chemical imbalance that vinegar would fix.

Get a mouthful of water, plug your ears, swallow slowly and hold your breath as long as you can.

Plug ears airtight with fingers, then drink a whole glass of water through a straw.

Paregoric (spelling may be off) will stop the spasm. Unless the irritation is on going - usually ends it. It’s an opiate, so may need to get it from a compounding pharmacy.

When I was a kid, I knew of a man who had jumped about 100 feet from a bridge after his wife left him for another man. He survived the jump with the help of a passerby in a boat, but last I knew, he’d had hiccups for two months straight.
