The gloves came off at Tomar Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where two deer went hoof to hoof in rarely seen footage of bucks gone wild. According to Keloland Television, “When bucks don’t have antlers to fight with, they stand straight up on their hind legs and battle with razor-sharp hooves.

All those fast-moving vehicles in the background and the herd of deer in the foreground is a bad combination.

Two of our quarterhorse mares fought like that. They didn’t injure each other, fortunately. When the fighting was the worst,my wife told me to go break it up.I asked her if she had just bought some more life insurance on me that I didn’t know about.

This actually happened to me once about 20 years ago. I was looking for a buck I just shot and found him up hidden in some brush. It had been about 15 minutes and he looked dead. I poked him and there was no movement. When I grabbed his hind legs to pull him out, I got pummeled in the knee and rib's and once in the shoulder. It took about 2 seconds and I was whipped. I put a .357 through his brain pan and waited about 3-4 more minutes. Steam was coming out of his head. I reached over once more and he kicked me again. I emptied the .357 into his head and waited 10 more minutes. I finally got him back to the truck, but I was definitely limping. His antlers weren't that impressive so there was no attempt to mount his head that was mostly missing by now.

If you don't respect them now, you will when you get whipped. They ain't dead till you make sure they are dead.

I saw two does fighting the same way in my pasture several years ago.

I observed it among a group of does spread over my backyard and neighbor's when we had a rare 20" of snow cover in NE OK a couple of years ago. These deer were very stressed because they'd never experienced snow cover like that keeping them from the usual food sources.

Their hooves are very sharp. I knew someone who was killed by a deer in a freak hunting accident. He was crouched down behind a boulder. The deer was on the other side of the boulder when he decided to jump over it. When the deer came down on the other side, one of his hooves pierced into the left temple of my hunter friend. Dead on the spot.

What’s amazing is that guy keeps jumping back in the ring and the deer whoops on him some more.

I always get a pucker factor when I approach one and then again when I start to rip that diaphragm. If their eyes are closed, watch out!!!

They ain't dead till you make sure they are dead.

I was hunting with two buddies, walking a side hill of oak brush about 100 yards apart. Manny was about 200 yards away, hunting with a cartridge I would consider marginal for mule deer, and Jack was in the middle. I heard a shot and started heading down to see what happened. I found Jack, sitting on the ground, in tears from laughter, and Manny stretched out on the ground moaning in pain.

Apparently Manny took a head shot and must have hit a horn boss because the buck went down. He approached the deer and after poking it to check for response, drew his knife, proceeded to grab the rack, and stepped over the carcase to slit the throat. Jack came through the brush at the same time and watched the deer jump up with Manny astride. Off they went, the deer bucking and Manny hanging on for dear life. The buck eventually bucked him off, just seconds before I made it on the scene.
