Well obviously nothing can be known unless one was a personal eye witness!/s
The evidence is overwhelming that wolves and dogs are essentially the same species and every breed of dog shares a common ancestry not just with every other breed of dogs but also with wolves. The same data that shows all mastiff breeds share a more recent common ancestor than they do with hound breeds also shows that they share a very recent common ancestor with wolves.
