find a pressure cooker
dump in a couple pounds of sand to simulate gunpower
throw in an alarm clock and an extension cord to simulate the timer/wiring
empty half your junk drawer in there to act as 'shrapnel'
put the lid on and tape it down if needed
now put the whole rig in a small day pack
pick it up and hold it in front of you, one or both arms doesn't matter
Now, have someone take a picture of it and post it here
Unless it's resting on your dog or a child's head, it won't look anything like what's in that guy's arms.

The woman in pink seems dressed for a warm day. I think most people I saw this year were bundled up for cooler weather.
I don’t think he is looking at the camera on purpose, he may just be watching the race.

Agree. The straps don't seem compressed very tightly down onto the arm. The pack itself shows little strain, as if the pack contained only light items, perhaps a jacket, a water bottle, and a sack lunch.
But perhaps we are thinking old fashioned, heavy pressure cooker, when none was used? The gray strapping seems to match...but then we don't know where this pic came from.
I could be wrong, but it doesn't look like more than a few pounds of whatever is in that bag. It could be enough, if we are not married to the pressure cooker idea.
Whatever it is...if it's that guy, I still can't imagine rational thought putting together tax day "protest" with random bombing/killings near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. What could be the connection? Why there? Because some disgruntled sociopathic whack-job lives in the area? Can either easily enough drive there, or ride a bus? Wants to hurt people, so goes for where there is a concentration of people? That last part "wants to hurt people" is obviously part of it all. Two explosions are not likely to have been accidental detonation of somebodies pipe-bomb playtoy.

Fact is, we have no idea who did this. The trail is cold and the FBI depends on people like us to come forward if they know something... such as who this guy is. As many have pointed out, he could be just a guy watching someone run. Black bookbags are common (I have one myself), but don’t you think the FBI might want to talk with anyone that was in the area with a black bookbag? Even if it were 500 people? They don’t seem to have other leads. Another thing, those of you obsessed with the political affiliation of the bomber make me sick. Whether the guy or gal is a right winger, left winger, muslim, or this was not politically motivated and just some ahole like Adam Lanza trying to kill a lot of people makes no difference. Evil is evil and the root of the world’s problems today is that good and evil are not recognized.
Perhaps he was one of those injured by the blast and his backpack took a big hit. There is nothing in these picks that conclusively proves the shredded backpack once held an explosive device.

Looking at where the lower portion of the backback strap should be, doesn't look quite right. There seems to show a shoulder portion of the strap ending, attached into some sort of diamond of light strapping. That part doesn't make sense, at all.
I have to go to work now, I expect CNN will latch onto this image shortly, or MSNBC.
If it bleeds, it leads, they are still looking for a bleeding story to support image acceptance and eventual acceptance.

I think the photos come from 4chan, so they could be a hoax.
So many people either want the killer to be a right wing nutjob or alternatively a jihadist and are completely unwilling to consider other options.
It could be either or neither.
It could be a straight-up “mad bomber”. Someone who just thought it’d be the funniest thing in the history of mankind to set off a bomb in a crowd at a sporting event.
Someone like that could be hard to catch: a conspiracy of one is usually the most successful.
Could even be an assassination attempt against a foreign national.
I heard that one of the persons killed was a Chinese national.
I give them about two or three hours.
