Review: Tom Cruise tones it down in visually stunning 'Oblivion'
Fox ^

Posted on 04/18/2013 12:21:34 PM PDT by Perdogg

“Oblivion” is a spectacular science fiction movie... until it isn’t.

Writer-director Joseph Kosinski (“Tron: Legacy”) has created a post-apocalyptic world so rich in detail and gorgeous design, that from the get-go it’s easy to assume this film will become a sci-fi classic. But as “Oblivion” crosses the threshold from the unknown to the all-too-obvious, the Tom Cruise alien adventure falls into familiar territory.

Sounds like the Xindi fiasco that ended “Enterprise” three years early. We stopped watching “Game of Thrones” because it just got too complicated and crowded to enjoy.

I like si-fi also, especially the old 1950s B&W versions. Even the hokey special effects I can live with.

Today’s si-fi are ok if they got a decent plot (BATTLE Los Angeles comes to mind), but not one driven by computer special effects (John Carter or the awful VAN HELSING).

Many are quick crap made for the sifi channel or quick DVD sale with awful special effects.

I’ll never forget the day back in 1976 when I sat down with my soda and popcorn to watch the Si-fi movie always shown on Saturday night TV.

What I got was...”LIVE FROM NEW YORK! IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!”

Si fi had disappeared for NY crap. I was never the same since.

I like sci fi, and I have rarely seen a Tom Cruise movie I didn’t like.

Cruise is like Mel Gibson - they may be borderline weirdos in person but put them either behind a camera or in front of one and they are two of the most talented people in the movie industry.

Who is Tom Cruise?

Some guy with a glass egg that likes to dance in his underwear.

The vast majority of all Tom Cruise movies goes like this:

He's an up and coming guy in his field, flashy and talented but vain and flawed.

Through some tribulations and challenges, he learns a bit about humility and about himself and learns a new set of values that make him a better person.

(They keep the clay tables off camera.)

One wag said that ‘Days of Thunder’ gave new meaning to the words “Formula One”.

Its got possibilities but I’m really hoping it gets better.

I wouldn't hold my breath. I was looking forward to it due to all the hype it got and was extremely disappointed.

IMHO, it's just another cheap sci-fi series with no real plot line and mediocre acting.

With that being said, I love all sci-fi movies and will look forward to watching more of Defiance. My criticism of it is over since it is what it is and really not up to argument status...........

As for Oblivion, I can't wait to see it despite whoever is starring in it. I don't discriminate against sci-fi or any other genre simply because of the politics of whoever is starring in the film.

Yes! The whole Xindi thing was a disappointing end to a good series. I haven’t seen Game of Thrones but I remember Heroes becoming so ridiculously complicated and muddled that I stopped watching that too.

Seven races living together on a terraformed earth.

Terraformed to someone else's idea of what their Terra looks like.

Allows exotic animals and plants, and nice beachfront property in Antarctica.

They seem to have altered quite a bit of the geology as well.

I think Defiance would had been much better off if they had treated it like a series they intend to keep.

They should have started with the other races on the Arkships and done a little background on both the ships and earth. They could have easily spent a season with the arkship arrival, terraforming, war and beginnings of arkfall.

One thing that really bothers me is the Gateway arch sticking up out of an alpine environment with no Mississippi river. I can suspend reality for a sci fi series but any terraforming process that can raise mountains like that is going to end that arch.

I did enjoy the alien girl singing Johnny Cash though.

Well, go on down to Jackson; go ahead and wreck your health.

Go play your hand you big-talkin' man, make a big fool of yourself,

Yeah, go to Jackson; go comb your hair!

Honey, I'm gonna snowball Jackson.
See if I care.

I also like the alien out walking his Jack Russel pup in the middle of the night.

YESSSS!

This is what should be on the "SyFy" channel instead of endless ghost chasing, paranormal bump humping and wrasslin'!

Not a big fan of Cruise and the movie has been getting mediocre reviews. Won't go see it in the theaters but will probably watch it when it comes on TV. If for no other reason than:

I watched the first episode of “Defiance” the other night. Its got possibilities but I’m really hoping it gets better.

If you go to wikipedia, it gives you the whole background on the series. It's so long and detailed I actually got tired of reading about it.

Since Rockne S. O'Bannon produced it, I am hoping it'll get better and be as good as Farscape.

While I agree with you, I'm also tired of the giant snakes and alligators and snake fish that dominate the Saturday afternoon Sy-Fi channel....

As a side note, the latest paranormal crap should be called "Red Neck Stupidity Paranormal" since that's what it looks like........sheesh!

Because I asked a question?

Is that a crime or something?

Why did you respond to my post if you aren’t going to answer my question?

It has nothing to do with global warming. I am sorry, the way you phrased it just came off as being snotty. ;)
