Boy, 2, mauled to death by family's pit bull inside their home

A toddler was killed by his family's pet pit bull on Wednesday in their home in Georgia.

The 2-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, was not home alone with the dog but his mother had just stepped at the room at the time of the attack.

The dog was is now in the custody of Fulton County Animal Services, and they said that they will be running tests on the dog.

Willie was named after William the Conqueror by his master General George S. Patton. Patton was an avid pit bull lover who wrote of Willie, “My bull pup took to me like a duck to water. He is 15 months old, pure white except for a little lemin [sic] on his tail, which to a cursory glance would seem to indicate that he had not used toilet paper…” Willie accompanied the commander everywhere and even had his own set of dog tags. The famously gruff general was so enamored of the dog, he even threw him a birthday party.

This picture was taken after Patton’s death in an automobile accident in 1945. Willie lived out his years with Patton’s widow and daughters. Willie is also memorialized standing next to his master in a bronze statue at the General Patton Memorial Museum outside of Indio, California.

There’s a guy at the local dog park who has a black lab named gauge. I don’t know if it’s being a black lab, or the way he just flaps his jaws with the other people and ignores what his dog is doing—but that certainly doesn’t help. His black lab will go apes-— on all the other dogs, and of course this guy only happens to look up when one of the other dogs finally gets fed up and snaps back.

Anything remotely related to animals became a threadjack and would have her anti-animal abuse posts in it. For instance some bus drives off a cliff and 10 people die. The tabitha soren response would be “_____ animals killed every day and no one cares.”

I just hope people don’t think only pits are an issue around small children. As far as I am concerned small children and large dogs just don’t mix.

In my experience, it depends upon the dog and what he's used to. We have always trained our dogs to get a treat when a small child puts a finger in the dog's eye or pulls his tail. Every German Shepherd we've ever owned has actually provoked kids into pushing and kicking him just so he could run over to the fridge for a reward.

My prayers are with this family. Surely they must have seen some sign of this dog's aggression toward their child.

I don't really believe pitbull are vicious

I've met lots of nice pit bulls. Can't say the same for lots of those little yappy terriers.

Before she married, my daughter bought a cute black puppy. This dog turned out to be the size of a small horse. A great big Great Dane, the largest I have seen personally.

That dog lived with her and protected her, later her and her husband, and later from their first girl all the the way through their third daughter.

He lived with them, the babies grew up with him, and he with them, I guess. Long story short, extremely tolerant, forgiving and loving dog to the girls and family, and fiercely (I mean very fiercely protective of the family in total, of the girls in particular). The dog never once bared his teeth to any of them.

Have you ever owned a big dog? For the most part, they're just not aggressive like little dogs. When big dogs hurt, they don't lash out at their families, they yelp and cry.

Sure there are exceptions, but if you spend some time with your dog, you know what kind you've got.

Pitbulls are the moslems of the animal world. They are perfectly nice, until they kill someone.

This animal killed the youngest member of it’s own pack! Bet the parent(s?) are glad they bought this breed now.

They force parents, with good reason, to put their kids in car seats but allow parents to keep a pitbull in a house with children. Go figure.

Dogs in the USA occupy the same position as cows in India.

I think that “Willie “ was a bull terrier. A different breed from a pit bull. Perhaps some freeper can help me out if I am wrong .

While I’m not personally a fan of pit bulls I do not believe it is fair to condemn the entire breed. My uncle worked at our local SPCA for 20+ years and maintained that poodles were the most consistently vicious dogs he ever encountered and the only one that ever bit him.

We have two large white shepherds. When we had our first son, they went outside and our children are highly supervised around them.

Dogs are decedents of wolves and pack animals.

If your sister had to escape her play pen to pester the dog it sounds like your mother was smart enough to keep them separated when your sister was very small. The problem I have is many people now have babies and toddlers and large dogs interacting with little or no adult supervision- as to how the child treats the dogs or what a dog’s instinct might be to pain or fear.

I think what you described is what most dogs do when small children pester them, most don’t lash out at the child. Also as you described it your mother kept the separation between baby/toddler and large dog so your sister was not allowed to pester that dog on a hourly/daily basis which might have made a difference. Another point is had the dog reacted badly it would have been a big deal just due to size difference.

I have had no experience with labs, but still would not trust them with small children and by that I mean babies and toddlers. Every baby I have ever seen has to be taught to be kind to animals; by instinct they are not kind, probably see the family dog as another toy not realizing it has feelings. During that baby/toddler stage when children are learning not to be mean to animals I think it is very risky to have them around big dogs of any breed unless an adult is right there hands on managing the encounter.

I have seen really nice gentle dogs react badly to fear and pain and babies and toddlers can dish out both so to me it is just not a combination to trust. It only takes one time of dog biting child for it to end badly with the size difference.
