Survey finds most men wait until last day to pack for vacation

WASHINGTON, - Women vacation more than men, and half the people going on vacation wait until the day before they leave to pack, a national travel survey indicates.

Women go on vacation every 10 months while men go every 12 months, a survey released Thursday by Springhill Suites by Marriott indicates.

Fifty-four percent of the men queried said they wait until a day before departure to pack. Only 46 percent of women said they procrastinated that long.

Some 85 percent of those surveyed said they would be willing to give up something during their vacation if it meant they could cut 25 percent off the cost of their hotel stays. For 54 percent of those of drinking age, that "something" was alcoholic beverages.

The survey found nearly a quarter of Americans don't get paid vacation days. Less than half of workers who do get that perk are given less than 15 days of paid vacation.

Americans also have mixed feelings about how to treat the housekeeping staff as their vacation comes to an end. Some 26 percent said they don't think the room maid should be tipped, but 74 percent still leave a tip. The average? About $8 for each night's stay.

The poll by Kelton Research surveyed 1,048 Americans more than 18 years of age March 12-19.

“Me, I pack everything I might possibly need...”

As does my wife, which is exactly why we don’t vacation together.

$8 tip per night? I didn’t realize the 18% tip rule had been extended to hotel rooms.

For extended trips, there is always the problem of washing clothes. Washing them in the hotel sink and drying on the shower rod doesn’t really work that well. If you do extended stays in places with laundry service, fine, but I heard of one couple traveling to Europe who had a good system. They packed all the old clothes that were ready for Goodwill or the trash and threw them away when dirty. They bought new ones as needed.

I once ended up on a business trip that was supposed to be one over night stay in Chicago. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the stay lasted the whole week. The only solution was to buy more clothes at a department store.

Also, a man can start getting dressed to go to a wedding 15 minutes before it’s time to leave, and be ready on time.

I always have clothes folded at the top of my closet and several packs of underwear and socks that are unopened. when it’s time to take a trip I just toss two or tree packs of each item in a suitcase or bag, grab some shirts slacks/shorts and some stuff from the bathroom and I’m done in under 5 minutes

I caught that, too. IMHO, if I’m paying your hotel close to $200 a night, you can afford to pay your cleaning staff better, so I don’t have to make up the difference.

That’s not chump change, either. Most cleaning crews are 1-2 people, and they clean probably 50 rooms a day. Not a bad gig, at an additional $400 a day, all in cash, so no taxes paid by those who choose to not report.

Incidentally, I did a little research, and the going rate is nowhere near $8 a day. It’s $1-2 for a regular hotel, $3-4 for a luxury hotel. And only if you get great service.

I am in the ‘what is a vacation’ crowd but the picture in #7 is one I can’t see enough.

Just the thought of that ‘tribe’ WALKING AWAY and STAYING GONE is vacation enough for me.

"old real quick"

Pretty much my opinion. Used to funny...then became just angry and unfunny.

Interesting picture.
Must have been BEFORE all the ‘health food fad’ started.

My cats don’t even like BO and tribe.

Every time they come on the tube - without saying a word - both of them leave the room.

Good cats...

I wonder if every time I see either one of their pictures I start throwing stuff and ‘scream’ STFU YOU DUMB MF! STFU!
GO AWAY! has anything to do with my cats ‘leaving the aree’

"hour or two"

And is there something wrong with packing that early? (snicker) Actually, my wife starts packing at least a week before a major trip. Then she shrieks at me "when are you going to start packing?!!!? " I yawn and reply that the morning of departure is usually enough time. As if you forget to pack toothpaste or shampoo, you won't be able to buy any along the way.

I fondly remember the times when all of my stuff fit in the car at the same time.

I traveled around Texas instructing Republicans in Texas election law and I keep some night clothes always in the bag so didn't have to pack that stuff. Had a list for me and checked it off as I put things in. Had a list for husband and I definitely checked those things off to be sure he had his stuff (which he really didn't care). Didn't go out the door until the lists were checked off.

Once out the door, made sure the right numbers of bags were in the car and the stuff I needed for the instruction.

THEN, HE MIGHT SAY, “PERHAPS I SHOULD CHANGE THE OIL IN THE CAR", or he would say, “I HAVE TO STOP FOR GAS”. MEN.
