Bombs drop on the Aleutian Islands [photo at link].
In the Aleutian Islands... An American squadron under the command of Admiral McMorris bombards the Japanese held harbors on Attu Island.
From Moscow... The Soviet government breaks off diplomatic relations with the London based Polish government in exile because of the allegations concerning the Katyn massacre.
In Tunisia... “Longstop” hill is captured by the British 5th Corps. The Churchill tanks used in the attack have proven useful in the hilly terrain.
From Washington... New plans are approved for the Solomon Islands operatoins (code named “Cartwheel”). Admiral Halsey’s South Pacific Area forces are to advance through New Georgia and Bougainville. MacArthur’s Southwest Pacific Area is to continue its advance northwest along the coast of New Guinea until he and Halsey can link up to isolate the Japanese bases at Rabaul and Kavieng.

April 26th, 1943 (MONDAY)
GERMANY: Tonight the RAF bomb Duisburg with 561 aircraft.
POLAND: Warsaw: At the close of a busy day, SS General Stroop reported by teletype to SS headquarters from the Warsaw Ghetto: “A further 1,330 Jews pulled out of dug-outs and immediately destroyed; 362 Jews killed in battle.” The day before, reporting the capture of 27,464 Jews, he told Himmler that he was ordering a train to take them to Treblinka extermination camp.
Stroop says that he has lost only 16 men in the battles, though the Jews put the figure at several hundred. He claims that the ghetto has been cleared, but there are still Jews hiding in the sewers, while others have escaped to seek refuge in the Christian sector of the city.
U.S.S.R.: Russia breaks diplomatic relations with the Exiled Polish Government over allegations concerning the Katyn Massacre.
TUNISIA: Longstop Hill, the gateway to the Tunisian plain, falls to the British V Corps.
INDIAN OCEAN: Off Mauritius: Subhas Chandra Bose, the leader of the Indian National Army, is transferred from a U-boat to a Japanese submarine en route from Berlin to Penang.
AUSTRALIA: 79 Squadron RAAF is formed on Spitfire Vcs at Laverton under Sqn Ldr AC Rawlinson. (Daniel Ross)
PACIFIC OCEAN: Japanese submarine I-23 is sunk by the USS Tautog (SS-199) south of Hawaii. (Mike Yared)(144&145)
U.S.A.: Japanese held harbour at Attu in the Aleutian Islands is bombed by a US naval squadron under the command of Admiral McMorris.
This was Task Group 16.6 consisting of:
Light cruisers USS Richmond (CL-9), USS Detroit (CL-8) and USS Santa Fe
(CL-60), and
Destroyers USS Caldwell (DD-605), USS Bancroft (DD-598), USS Coghlan
(DD-606), USS Frazier (DD-607), USS Gansevoort (DD-608) and USS Edwards
(DD-619).
Kiska Island is bombed.
The TG bombarded Adak Island from 0815 to 0840 hours local; the Japanese did not return fire.
Royal Canadian Air Force
P-40K-1-CUs of No. 111 (Fighter) Squadron based on Kodiak Island fly 24 sorties while five USAAF B-25s abort due to the usual Aleutian Island weather. (Jack McKillop)
Operation Cartwheel is agreed to. This has US Admiral Halsey’s forces move through New Georgia and Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. US General Douglas MacArthur will move NW along the coast of New Guinea. Then they will both attack Rabaul, New Britain and Kavieng, New Ireland.
Bump.
Re: Mussolini naming new Party bosses. Kind of like being appointed First Officer on the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.
The Luftwaffe is pulling out what they have left in Tunisia.
Quiz - How many men does a Bf 109 fighter hold?
Top of page 4, Still amazed at how such an innocent word has been completely corrupted in the past 40 years.
Ever read Adolf Galland’s ‘The First And The Last’ about the Luftwaffe? A great read, despite his Nazi politics.
The aircraft carrier USS Ranger was never torpedoed by a U-boat, despite the Nazi claim.
Depends on the size of the men. There was a cargo compartment occasionally used to squeeze a second man into.
Two random thoughts for today;
Based on the photographs, I believe I’ll be attending Riverside Church.
Do you think General McNair will learn his lesson about the dangers of getting too close to the front?
At least two, maybe three?
When they were evacuating Tunisia, they apparently stuffed two ground crew men in with the pilot. One of the pilots (Ernst Reinert) got into a dogfight over the Med and managed to shoot down the allied fighter even with the two extra guys in his plane.
It looks like the final evacuation took place about May 8, so I’m a bit early with this.
Yes, years ago. I've been in several business situations where I've come to have a greater understanding of his descriptions of the last weeks of the war when they went from scrounging for parts and equipment to having a excess as units were dissolved and passed equipment to the few remaining functional units.
With two extra guys throwing up in his plane, no doubt.

“...During the final evacuation of Tunisia, Hammer was able to fly four men out in his Bf 109s baggage compartment on four separate missions”
Sounds like the piker was only taking one at a time.
