Netflix has “Crash Dive” on DVD.

This may be the first of the big WWII submarine movies. Hollywood is not quite up to speed on life in the silent service yet. Sonar may be top-secret technology in 1943 but we are left wondering how both sides were able to find submerged submarines without it. Some of the Technicolor footage shot on location at the New London base is interesting.

Don’t miss the bonus music review on page 2. Olin Downes braves the teen-age mob to experience a Harry James concert.

The last surviving store closed in the mid-eighties.

Some things don’t change. The Times is still baffled by American popular culture. :-))

There are some really nice shots of ships in the New London squences. Most notably they show a few ships in the real World War II paint scheme of dark blue as opposed to the “Navy Gray” you see in so many films.

Much of the USN fleet wore some sort of camoflage based on dark blue during the War.
