At the two-thirds mark for meteorological spring, 2013 was the second coldest spring on record – slightly warmer than 1975.

ScreenHunter_157 Apr. 26 06.02

Data is from here : Index of /pub/data/ghcn/daily/hcn/

But 1975 had an unusually warm May at 17C. The two warmest months of May were in 1934 and 1896.

Both graphs above show the average of all daily temperatures at all US HCN stations, calculated per year.

The forecast for the first two weeks of May is well below normal, so odds are that the spring of 2013 will be the coldest on record in the US.  This is what Fort Collins looked like at 7pm today (May 1.)

Crack government scientists with supercomputers, predicted in January that this spring was going to be super hot!

Northeast Arkansas has a forecast for snow in the next few days. I’m in the far southeast corner and I’m loving the cooler weather for now.

Much of Texas will have a killing freeze tonight, doing damage to trees that have leafed out and those that have fruit on them. When pecan trees are fooled, it’s a sign of the last times.

Here in CA, we’ve had an unbelievable heat wave this week. 20+ degrees above normal. Records being broken all over the place. It’s miserable.

"Snowstorm in northern Idaho yesterday. 65 Fahrenheit today. Weird."

I live in the Utica-Rome NY area...foothills of the Adirondacks. We always have weird weather this time of year. One day it can be in the 60's; the next day in the high 20's with snow. Back in 2000, we had a heavy snowstorm on Mother's Day. We usually go from winter weather, right into summer without having any kind of spring.

OMG, we're all going to die.

Me from a heart attack cleaning up the ice storm debris that still exists around the yard despite weeks of work.

57 and gray and drizzling in Charlotte today. It feels like March 2 out there, not May 2. Though before this gray patch, the weather last week was awesome...65-70 during the day and sunny, absolutely perfect. I’m just waiting for it to snap from 60s to 90+ with no break in between, like it often does here in the South.

Went to my daughter’s regional track meet today near Fort Worth. 42 degrees, windy, raining, sleeting all day. I’m still trying to warm up. Who’da thought this part of Texas would be this cold in May?

It was 98 at my house today, but you won’t see it in the news, it is a small micro-climate in East San Diego.

I would bet money that it will reach 100 tomorrow.

Coldest on record?

Look at NE Oklahoma and NW Arkansas.

I remember back in 1972 when Tulsa, OK was 105 degrees on May 5!
Then in 1978 it was 42 degrees on May 1!

Then in the early 1980s we had FROST on May 19!
Then in the early 1990s we had a drought clear through May!
We had snow in the middle of April around 2005!
And who can forget the terrible March 14 snow storm of 1968!
