A Philadelphia mother wants her sons high school teacher fired after he bought the teen the novel Fifty Shades of Grey for in-class reading.
Maya Ladson says she was shocked to find a copy of the racy read in her 14-year-olds book bag back on March 9. That shock turned to outrage when she found out how he got the book.
The minute I found out about it, it raised concern, the mother told NBC10.com Thursday. This is not OK to me. This is major.
Ladson's son, who is a 9th grade student at Eastern University Academy Charter School in the East Falls section of Philadelphia, asked for and was given the book by his teacher and adviser Philip Aidoo.

“Teacher and advisor”
We know what that means.
At least the mother isn’t happy about this. That’s a good sign.
I was worried he might have given the kid a bible, which would have gotten him fired immediately, and probably gotten him put on a terrorist watch list.
I want to know who mom voted for before anything else.
In Braille ?
“Charter” schools are still gubmint schools.
The police need to investigate teacher Aidoo. They’d doubtless find some “activity” with his students. This kind of thing is a classic “grooming” move.
Nope, can’t have any of those Greek classics.
French - nope, no frogs.
British - bad influence.
And one wonders why home schooling is becoming more and more popular.
However, I am somewhat surprised that this comes from a “Charter School”. I thought that - being not directly associated with the *sshats currently running our public schools - there might actually have been some standards.
Good point.
I’ve never heard of a teacher buying books for a class. Something here is unclear. You can be sure the teacher did not pay out of his pocket.
If he did in fact pay for the books “out of his own pocket” then he was probably expected to submit the invoice in order to be reimbursed by the school. When the parent objected, suddenly it became ‘his purchase’ in order to shield the school. This is potentially a way to get around alot of parental involvement - parents are allowed to review the text books and remain unaware of whatever ideology or ‘grooming’ teachers choose to put forth.
sloppy post - sorry. I meant that the school/teachers may allow parents to review ‘school materials’ like text books but on the side, allow teachers to provide students with ‘enrichment material’ (not just pornographic but also ideologically inappropriate) by having them order books online in the classroom. The students could leave their ‘special’ books in class (probably directed to do so).
With pop-up characters. Maybe even scratch and sniff version.
I’ve known teachers who purchased stuff for their students and no the schools usually do not reimburse them.
Then again, arming teachers may not be such a good idea. Some of them are real loons.
And the teacher’s a dude to boot!
quotes from the comments section:
“ Apparently he should know better than to trust this woman’s son. He has been punished and that should be the end of it. The child on the other hand purposely mislead this teacher and asked for something he knew was inappropriate. “
“She should counter by buying the school 50 Bibles. Books can’t hurt you right? Learning moral lessons about life is good right? Pizzin’ off the A.C.L.U. is even better...... right?”
“, its clearly the parents fault that the child wanted it in the first place, what is he being exposed to by them!”
This is is Charter School—not a public school. I find that even more appalling. Chances are that the kid’s parents are paying for him to attend that school.
Isn’t that a story about how someone gets beaten down and abused to the point where they are psychologically broken and submit to whatever their masters tell them to do? Sounds like the teacher was just trying to teach the kid what our public education system does to students.
What would you say if I told you that this was all an advertising ploy for “Fifty Shades of Grey” ?
