Police facing questions in Cleveland rescue

CLEVELAND (AP) -- One neighbor says a naked woman was seen crawling on her hands and knees in the backyard of the house a few years ago. Another heard pounding on the home's doors and noticed plastic bags over the windows.

Both times, police showed up but never went inside, neighbors say. Police also paid a visit to the house in 2004, but no one answered the door.

Now, after three women who vanished a decade ago were found captive Monday at the peeling, rundown house, Cleveland police are facing questions for the second time in four years about their handling of missing-person cases and are conducting an internal review to see if they overlooked anything.

City Safety Director Martin Flask said Tuesday that investigators had no record of anyone calling about criminal activity at the house but were still checking police, fire and emergency databases.

The three women were rescued after one of them kicked out the bottom portion of a locked screen door and used a neighbor's telephone to call 911.

"Help me. I'm Amanda Berry," she breathlessly told a dispatcher in a call that exhilarated and astonished much of the city. "I've been kidnapped and I've been missing for 10 years and I'm, I'm here, I'm free now."

Berry, 27, Michelle Knight, 32, and Gina DeJesus, about 23, had apparently been held captive in the house since their teens or early 20s, said Police Chief Michael McGrath.

I'm sort of surprised these three women were held for ten years and could not find a way to escape...

Don't read into that statement anything other than curiosity...

Their captives must have had a real tight system to keep the under wraps...

Ohh so we're going to limit our investigation to criminal activity only. How about reports of suspicious things at that location and how many times the police followed up and knocked on the door and no one answered. Or do you just want to wait until there is a dead body so you can use your chalk.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Gary Heidnik kept five chained in his basement. So very easily they were tied up, or locked in a room.

Now there are reports of neighbors calling police when seeing a nude woman in the backyard and of a girl holding a baby in 2011 and calling for help. In the latter case, the police came, knocked on the door, and when nobody answered, they went away. btw, all men are from Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico flag flied on the house.

Gary Heidnik

Never heard of him...Google cleared that up...

Makes one wonder how many other women are chained up somewhere we never hear about...

Well they don`t have a very good track record, heard of the Sowell murders? That’s the guy who killed then hid women IN his Cleveland home for years, all the while the Cleveland PD received numerous complaints from neighbors of the stench of rotting flesh coming from the house.

No but IF you lived in or near Cleveland, and I do, you`d know that the cops there are your classic donut scarfing, fat assed lazy, roust the law abiding because they`re to chicken shit to mess with the gang-banger, creeps with badges.

Ohio is a CCW state but I don`t live in Cuyahoga County so I don`t know bout Cleveland, just go up there from time to time when I HAVE TOO, other than that, screw Cleveland AND Akron, leftist sh!t holes! We held a couple of Tea-Party rallies there and the cops were almost as hostile as the ghetto trash.

Sorry M, didn't see your #9 above before cracking wise .. was referring to those yellow 'caution wet floor' things and .. oh nevermind.

Do not hesitate to get State cops involved if nothing comes of the meeting with the Chief in the morning.
They'll likely have access to resources that the locals don't.

In the meantime, sleep with an eye open and something at hand to defend yourself.
