Right now in the special session of the state legislature, lawmakers are fighting powerful interests to ban versions of the chemical.

Dr. Dennis Wackerbarth is a top expert on hyperthyroidsim, and he said countless numbers of cats die from the disease each year.

The name of the chemical wouldn't be Curiosity, would it?

The article goes from “this chemical (flame retardants) is killing our cats” to “this chemical everywhere and is killing everyone!”

*sigh* Why can’t advocacy pieces just come right out and say what they are?

The linked report says they are polybrominated diphenyl ethers. Maybe they're scared of the chemical industry buring down their office and leaving a note "Should have had more flame retardants, hahahahaha!"

“this chemical (flame retardants) is killing our cats”

Well, don't treat your cat with flame retardant and the cat will be just fine.

Poorly written article that leaves more questions than it answers. Of course, what can we expect from so called journalists these day?

For example, how are cats being impacted by flame retardant toxins? Are they consuming flame retardants? Are they rubbing against the flame retardants and they get into their skins? This crappily written article never says.

Get 1,000 cats from random places

Expose all of them to heavy amounts of this chemical

Breed the ones that are least affected to each other...

Repeat... Until the resultant cat population is no longer affected...

Eventually this problem will go away...

I've heard this theory a few years ago. I had a cat with HyperT and it's very common now. Cats lay on the carpets/furniture and also rub against curtains. Do you want your kids wearing flame retardant clothing?

The state House passed a ban on additional flame retardants in household items and children's products. Lawmakers also created a system to stop chemical companies from switching to yet another version deemed just as bad.

Wow, it seems not that long ago that the nanny press was all agog about how children’s cloths weren’t fire resistant and because the garment industry didn’t want to spend the money on fire retardants hundreds of children every year were killed or maimed.

And if all of these cats have hyperthyroidism why is this the first I have heard of it. I know a lot of cat owners and never a peep.
