How Plant a Garden on Mars — With a Robot

Mars in particular is a key target for future human planetary adventures even though on the face of it, it seems so hostile to human life. In fact Mars actually has the most clement environment of any planet in the Solar System outside of Earth and is known to have all of the resources necessary in some accessible form, to sustain life on the surface. So how might we survive on Mars? The crucial things for humans on Mars are the availability of oxygen, shelter, food and water, and not just endless consumables delivered to the planet from Earth. For humans to live long-term on Mars, they will need a self-sustaining habitat to be able to thrive in for generations.

In short, they’ll need a garden. And maybe a robot, too.

Any garden on Mars would need protection in the form of a greenhouse or geodesic dome that could keep the vegetables, fruits, grains and flowers sheltered from the extreme UV radiation that floods the Martian surface, whilst still allowing enough sunlight through to allow them to grow. This dome would also have to be strong enough to provide support and protection against potentially devastating Martian dust storms.

It’s not so much that it leaks, as Earth leaks as well, but the rate of leaking. It’s unlikely that we could produce enough atmosphere to compensate to the point where we could make it viable.

Plant pine trees, various grasses, create mossy environments smell barley andbhops for beer. that ought to create a ton of oxygen and keep the ugly people happy.

Can’t we just insert perils in the center and let them spin the planet a bit faster to create a stronger magnetic files and pull?

Titan is smaller than Mars and has the densist atmosphere outside of the gas giants.

It has the elements. Plants don't generally take up elements directly. Usually, beneficial micro-organisms deal with the rotting wood, limestone, granite, whatever before the plants can eat.

So little bugs should be the first things seeded. Unless we prove that Mars already has an infection.

You have to have a protecting lay that reflects most of the UV rays. Size has little to do with it.

Actually the idea of us colonizing any planet in any number at all is about as remote as developing warp drive.

The models I've seen have had atmosphere lifetimes of 10s of millions of years. I don't know if it was Marinova's stuff that I was reading that in... but she's pretty hip on Mars. She got her PhD on the possibility of a large impactor on Mars.

I think they need “Genesis.” Launch it and in less than a week there will be a garden of eden and everything that can support life.

Of course the next week it implodes. But hey, that’s what happens when you contract out to Solyndra.

There is a correlation between the size of a planet and its ability hold an atmosphere, even if it’s an imperfect correlation.

Here’s an article as to why Titan has an atmosphere.
