Vegas' Most Baffling Listing Boasts Underground 'Backyard'
Yahoo Homes ^ | 5/16/13 | Amy Schellenbaum

The home was built by Avon cosmetics executive Girard Henderson, who, in the late '60s, decided to construct an entire second home as underground nuclear fallout shelter "designed to withstand virtually any disaster and protect against almost any intruder," the L.A. Times reported in 1996, when the 16,936-square-foot manse was on the market for a whopping $8M. Perched beneath what was once a caretaker's house on gated property, the bunker has its own generator and fuel tank, and can supposedly sustain life for a year. Pretty gaudy-looking place, IMO. The plastic flowers and landscape are a nice touch. LOL.

I wonder how hard it would be to use fiber-optics to ‘pipe sun light down?

Wow. That would have been a seriously swanky bomb shelter in the 60s.

Groovy.

What a POS.

I would tear out all that old laminate crap and at the very minimum would have painted tromp Loeil on the ceiling of the backyard. Which is at least four feet to low. Need 18’ ceilings to feel like you are bringing outdoor in.

With LED’s you could light it up real nice.

But, the atrocious appointments in the house would have to go.

Very Gauche, Very old time Vegas.

lol amazing that I have passed this place so many times and never knew. Its about 400 yards away from our condo that we have in Vegas. We live about an hour away in Pahrump Nevada but have the condo for when we have company come, and its right down the street from it. Who would have known.

Then you’d have to waste water on plants, soils, bugs, disease, drainage etc problems. Better to gut the whole place and start over, with $20 million or so. Another example of someone with too much money and too little knowledge. But that was the 60s, so there’s an excuse, I guess.
