VANITY: Popups from cloudfront.net - How to make them stop?
Vanity ^ | 5-22-2013 | Vanity

Posted on 05/22/2013 6:29:53 AM PDT by OKSooner

Okay I'm sick of it and as we all know FR is the best place in the world for good information so this is the deal.

My IE keeps getting these "popup" kinda things from some outfit called "cloudfront". Best I can tell is they're some kind of 3rd party distribution front for certain software packages like flash player and java that bug the ^$%#@ out of you to install this or that.

If I want up upgrade my java, or flash player, or anything else I'll do it myself.

you need two things-

1) www.avast.com (virus protection- get the free HOME version, buy it if you like it - I do because I think it is the best)

2) malwarebytes.com - ant-malware

download and install them both. let them BOTH do a full-scan of your system (overnight)

Some viruses are so bad they will recognize anti-virus and anti-spam and prevent them from running, let me know if you run into that because that needs a whole more complex process

I second the suggestion of using Malwarebytes. Great product.

Also if you’re using Windows.... please make sure your windows firewall is enabled on max settings for public.

Firefox + NoScript + AdBlockPlus

Second that. Unless you're a little more techie, shouldn't be using IE for anything you don't absolutely have too.

Chrome + Adblock plus

Also, if you have an older spare computer around. Throw a copy of Ubuntu on it. Linux is fantastic for secure browsing.

You might try the free Do Not Track from Abine. It works with Firefox and IE.

Also this about Cloudfront:

I occasionally run SuperAntiSpyware (free version) to remove tracking cookies.

Cloudfront seems to be an Amazon feature. How else are they going to know what you like, and recently viewed, and need — even before you think you need it.

I have a Trojan doing the same thing. AVG has not taken it out like last time. Work in Progress.

Stop using IE. It’s far and away the worst browser on the market. Just because it’s packaged with Windows doesn’t make it safe, secure, or practical.

Firefox with AdBlockPlus, NoScript, Ghostery, and Cookie Monster will keep you browsing relatively undetected.

First scan your machine with MalwareBytes, though.

I used to recommend Firefox, but their rapid release insanity has done more harm than good.

My banking ‘tunnel’ software doesn’t work with older FF now (I am using FF15). But, if I upgrade to the more current FF21 or whatever it is today, I lose several add-ons/extension that the developers no longer update. And FF and Adobe Flash have not played nice since about FF12.

Newer isn’t always better. Newer can be crap.

Mozilla created a good product, and now they are destroying it.

If it is a program ad block won’t stop it.

It could be as simple as removing a program installed by them.

go to control panel

uninstall programs

look for a program with cloudfront in name.

uninstall that program.

Some companies will add program when you down load something you want. You need to uncheck a box to stop the extra program(s) from coming.

You can sort the list of installed programs by install date to make search easier.

I downloaded a HTML editor a missed unchecking a program they pushed with it. You can make a good guess at who did it because they are usually down load about the same time. It add their search bar to windows. Uninstalling got rid of it.

Try Firefox ESR. It's for organizations (and people) who do not want the rapid releases of the main product.

So why are you using IE in the first place?

From another site: If this is in Internet Explorer, and is a homepage that has come with a stupid toolbar thing then disable this by going into tools and manage addons, find the one resembling cloud and disable it. Then go into tools and internet options and change your home page to google or something better.
