Free Republic | May 31, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 05/31/2013 12:45:59 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Greetings from Missouri. We have a cloudy day at a nearly perfect 75 degrees for seed sprouting. I hope all the seeds planted so far take the hint.

We have had plenty of stormy weather, hot, cold, and mild temperatures. Fortunately so far, the worst of the lines have hit north and south of our little acre. Lettuce and Spinach has provided several salads this week. It's so great to just go out and pick the amount you need or want.

All the potatoes have been received and planted and are finally sprouting. Peanuts have survived the transplanting melons have not (sigh).

I had 4 tomatoes that were strong enough to transplant and I got those in. The larger green pepper plants are transplanted. I still have several of both in sprouting trays that don't appear too healthy, so I may just redo those in a pot outdoors and see where it goes from there.

I am moving slowly this year, so I still have about half of my raised beds left to plant or transplant depending on the crop. Course I am just growing stuff for trial eating and seed saving. Hubby is growing all the heavy duty stuff for harvest and preserving.

I have 14 beds. All except one are 3x4 feet. One is just 2x4 ft. I had hoped to get them all done sometime in May.

gorush has advised that he will be posting his chicken tractor and bird pictures.

jjr153 can't post early but would like to know if anyone can think of red white and blue flowers all of one species that he can plant to make a flag 13x25 feet. Stripes would be 1" wide. I was one of these in a magazine a few years back, but can't remember the name of the magazine, nor the flowers used.

Praying for all the people impacted by tornadoes and storms. Have a great week end. Stay safe, and God Bless.

Hope you don't mind me reposting my tree pics. Hope someone knows what it is. I looked up orange mock and it doesn't appear to match.

It's also about 12-15 feet tall. I might have a few more pics I can upload in a bit.

It sure looks like some sort of fruit tree. Does it form ‘fruits’ after the blossoms fade?

It kinda looks like my wife’s transfer back to Merdian, Ms is a go. Wal- Mart has listed her job position here as open for application and the position she applied for in Ms is closed. We went to Mississippi this past weekend, moving as much as we could in our little trailer and my lawn mower back to our home. We are back in Texas now. My wife is off for the next few days and in a packing up mode. I have re-potted the tomato starts I bought to plant in my raised bed here in Texas. I hope I can get them in the ground in Mississippi before they decide to die!

So glad for you that you don’t have to try to maintain 2 places, and can maybe do a little more gardening. Best of luck with the tomatoes.LOL

It's hot here. 92F. I want the cool weather back.

I started the first batch of mushrooms this week, and I'll see how that goes. At least I've got the temp correct for growing them. They are in a box sitting in front of the window unit AC, and a nice even 68F.

I've been hand killing horned tobacco worms this week. I got 4 this morning. But mostly, my tobacco is doing well, if missing a few leaves.

This is the same plant that I posted a picture of a few weeks ago. The board at the bottom is still 3 ft long with marks at 1ft.

Send a picture of a typical leaf

Dug the taters on Monday I got about 20# great!!

How many should I keep for fall potatoes and when do I plant those down here in South TX?

All the onions are pulled as well they did great this year!

I planted my ‘maters too close together this year but they are still doing great have picked about 6 good red ones and the bushes are full... mostly celebrity and big boys.

14 stalks of corn and the silk is getting brown.. fresh corn soon.

OK the crookneck squash... it has done very poor this year...good mounds, watered, fertilized and not much fruit. Not sure what I did wrong with it.

and the Okra is going very slow this year as well starting to get concerned with it.

wish I had a host site I would post some pics.

I have been enjoying the pretty pansies. They are still in full bloom because it has been a cooler than normal spring. Temperatures are heating up so the pansies will fade out. It is near 90 degrees or above right now. No rain until Monday. That is a good thing as needed to dry out from the last rounds of rain.

We have a new neighbor who moved in next door. Retired Navy (30 years) wonderful happy and helpful guy. He is from New York but loves Meridian. And has two beautiful young German Shepherds. He plans to mate them. Maybe my wife and I can get one of the pups. I so need a dog to help around the garden.

Best I can tell we have had nearly 5 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. I hear thunder off in the distance as I type. Garden is a bog and I had streams across the back and in the front of the property this am. Garden is wet.

We’ve had nice weather in Central Missouri this week, if you’re a duck or a fish or a gator. Not so nice otherwise. Localized flooding has been quite bad and it looks like the big river is headed out of its banks real soon now. 4.3” in my rain gauge this morning and it was still dumping.

But, I was having to water the garden at this time last year so I suppose I shouldn’t be bellyaching about it too much.
