A vehicle emissions reduction device, which is mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency, forced an ambulance to shut down while carrying a suspect who was shot by Washington, D.C., police.
The EPA mandated device is meant to reduce diesel emissions and is required to be placed on all newer model diesel vehicles. The device can burn off diesel toxins automatically or manually, but if neither of those happen during the re-generating cycle, warning lights pop on and the vehicle is eventually forced to shut down.
Another ambulance came to pick up the suspect 7 minutes after the first one stopped, and the suspect was pronounced dead on arrival at Howard University Hospital.

How ‘bout that EPA? Have they begun their furloughs yet?
I guess exploding space shuttles were not enough for the EPA...
Runs as effectively as the IRS. Your gummit at work.

Big Brother is alive and well.
Expect him to reach into every facet of your life, and dictate how you’re to live it.
After all, he’s SO much brighter than we mere mortals. For HE has a mandate...
I am no fan of EPA, but let’s have some facts:
DPF - Diesel Particulate Filter, not “mandated” by EPA in any way shape or form. But the industry has adopted this technology as the best way to meet the EPA/EU reductions on NOx emissions. If they come up with a better way, they’re free to use it, all EPA says is the engine has to comply with the standards.
DBFs must regenerate to prevent the catalyst becomes spoiled. There is an indicator to inform the driver, but if regeneration does not occur, what will happen is the DPF will be ruined and must be replaced.
If the vehicle manufacturer ties the onboard DPF regeneration into the vehicle control system in a way that affects driveability, that is the vehicle OEMs decision, not the EPAs. Put the blame where it belongs, the vehicle manufacturer made this decision.
Off-board regeneration is also used, and is suitable for vehicles like ambulances, forklift trucks, farm equipment, etc which are always returned to one location after usage, where they can be connected to the regeneration system. This would have avoided this entire issue. Ask the ambulance manufacturer why they didn’t do it.
The diesel particulate filter, DPF, which looks like a large muffler was added to most medium and heavy duy trucks in 2007. Periodically they go into regen mode which results in diesel fuel being injected into the DPF and ignited to burn up the particulate matter which is restricting the exhaust. The exhaust temp when that happens is about 800 degrees. Sometimes the engine just shuts down. Wait until that happens to a fire engine supplying water to firefighters inside a structure fire.
Ya man!
These clowns have no clue. Their “sustainable” agenda won’t get them thru the next ice storm, or flood, or tornado.
A bunch of granola-head wishful thinking La-La Land idiocy.
Strangulation by bureaucracy.
Didn’t they mandate catalytic converters many years ago and people rebelled and removed them? http://www.importtuner.com/features/0610impp_catalytic_converter_removal/viewall.html

Reads like a test run for an Obamacare denial-of-service tactic. I wonder if the suspect was an organ donor? (Can't be too cynical and/or paranoid these days!)
hope the victims family sues the EPA out of business...
Will the GOP use this incident to hammer the ineffectiveness of the EPA? Never let a crisis go to waste as Democrats say.
This is not a story so much about diesel engines and the EPA as it is about the gross negligence of the DCFD in maintaining their fleet of fire trucks and ambulances. This story is but the tip of the iceberg. You can find quite a few stories about this ongoing problem by poking around a bit.
I’m no fan of the EPA and regulation, but this type of thing is completely avoidable with proper maintenance.
After all, you don’t hear about this type of thing in your home town, right?
This EPA crap is killing human beings every day of the week, even if it’s not in quite so dramatic a fashion.
But, then, that’s the whole point; the environmentalists won’t truly be happy until we’re all back living in caves and the entire globe has been “given back” to the animals.
Your post is an obvious plant by some right wing wacko.
Everyone knows that truckers are a bunch of hick rednecks on wheels that can’t do simple math. Very different from the sophisticated EPA...that can’t do simple math. /S
On the good side, this ambulance was only carrying a criminal - one who died. If it was carrying a decent person (not a thug or a community organizer), then I would care more.
