The Beer Frontier: The summer of shandys (& other fruit suds) starts now
National Post ^ | JUNE 9, 2013 | Jason Rehel

It did not warrant its own entry in first edition of The Oxford Companion to Beer (or even a spot in the extensive index). An older dictionary yields a curt definition: “a mixed drink of beer and ginger-beer or lemonade. Origin unknown.” And it’s definitely a backyard beverage that, with a few simple ingredients, you could mix up yourself. Still, there’s a good chance you (or someone next to you) will be sipping one of the many new prepared versions of this beverage in the next few months.

I’m not a beer drinker myself, so I guess I have no opinion on this. I will say, however, that people who mix good scotch with coca-cola or sprite should be shot.

Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy is a passable summer cooler.

Some beers really lend themselves to this actually.

Hefeweizen with lemon or lemonaid is a tradition in Germany.

It is very, very good.

Served very cold on a hot summer day, it is refreshing and has the benefit of a low ABV so you can drink a lot of it without getting smashed.

Cheers,

Berliner Weisse is a sour wheat beer, usually mixed with raspberry or woodruff juice and served in a bowl-shaped glass.

If you have to add flavor to the beer, don’t buy it in the first place:CORONA.

I’ve been drinking shandys ever since I first had one in Singapore back in the 80’s.

Shock Top makes an unfiltered raspberry wheat ale that is fantastic. A tangerine one too I hear, but haven’t seen it to try it. Not normally into fruity beers, but I like the unfiltered wheat ales.

That's just a Miller Lite commercial trying to make people think it's "manly" to drink that mass-produced lightweight swill by making fun of people who put fruit in their drinks.

That said, I am a bit of a purist when it comes to beer. If it complies with the German purity law, it's usually a good beer.

Beer’s gross. Can’t imagine it being less gross with fruity additions. To each his/her own.

I’m not much of a drinker but my SIL has been home brewing. A couple of his efforts have been excellent. One with a touch of unsweetened chocolate could make me forget Guinness Stout when accompanying Thai curry or Mexican food.
