In Canada and Russia: Paul Henderson’s goal with 30-odd seconds remaining to give Canada the win in an eight-game series with the Soviet Union. He saved the free world.

Best fight ever in Canada: Archie Moore knocking out Yvon Durelle after he was flattened something like five times in the early rounds.

I second Mazeroski. What made that World Series so exciting was that the Yanks were a powerhouse who clobbered the upstart Pirates in three games. The Pirates squeaked out three wins and then the last game went back and forth like a ping pong match until Mazeroski stepped up.

That and the 1980 US win over the Soviet team are the best that come to mind to me

I agree about Secretariat... 40 years ago, TODAY!

I’d add...

- Jack Nicklaus winning the 1986 Masters.

- Bobby Thompson’s walk off HR to with the WS.

- 1969 Jets winning the Super Bowl

- 1983 NC State beating Phi Slamma Jamma from UH (I was a Cougar fan) Biggest Upset ever..

- Reggie Jackson’s HR’s in a WS game

- The Heidi Game (football)

-

Grrrr....

My pick is the Heidi Game

Disclaimer: I was born in Oakland and my football heroes were Darryl Lamonica and George Blanda. You could just see the other team’s players deflate when Blanda come on in the 4th quarter.

I remember that like it was yesterday. No baseball fan, but I lived in LA at the time, and what the heck, my roommate (rabid baseball fan) had the game on. I happened to walk through the room just a few seconds before Gibson made that hit. It was hopeless. The Dodgers had several hurt players, Gibson among them, they were down...Gibson might have had 2 strikes on him, and in that moment, he sort of threw the bat at the ball and the ball took off in a straight, non-parabolic flight path, impossibly over the wall. Remember Lasorda (and the whole team) running across the field like a Banshee? Nobody imagined that Lasorda could even run, much less that fast.

I remember catching a touchdown pass when I was about 8 years old. Easy top 10. Probably #1.

The Rams just holding on to win the Superbowl on the last play of the game would be my #2.

Lou Gehrig’s Speech is #1.

The USA Olympic hockey team beating the Russians is #2

The next spot is somewhere around #207.
