An Army reservist on Long Island says he woke up Monday morning to see hateful words spray-painted in bright red on his property.
Bryant Walker, who served one tour in Iraq, said someone went to his house on Moriches Road in Mastic Beach overnight and spray painted the n-word on his fence and on his boat. The vandal or vandals also defaced two of his cars.
"It's a total violation," said Walker, who works full-time for New York City Transit.
Walker did not hear anything unusual, and his pit bull never barked overnight, but he believes his home was vandalized in the early morning hours. His 8-year-old daughter Bryanna saw the hateful words on her way to school.
"At first she said, you know, 'Whoever wrote that, I hate them.' And I said, 'Don't hate them, Bryanna,'" said Walker. "They're ignorant, you can't hate people like that. Just try to understand what they did, and what they did was bad."
Suffolk County Police said they were investigating the vandalism as a hate crime and were looking into whether the criminal mischief is linked to another act of vandalism on Sayville Road, where someone also spray painted a hateful statement in red.
Walker said he saw police take paint chips from the fence and the boat to be sent to a lab for analysis, and police are also looking for security cameras in the neighborhood that may have captured whoever is responsible.
The Walkers have lived in Mastic Beach for two years and say they have always felt welcome. The family says they have never had any disputes with their neighbors. Now they wonder if they are safe in their home.
Walker said he was "more disappointed than mad."
"It's just unfortunate in this day and age that people do stupid things like that," he said.
This happened in “Blue” New York? And the dog didn’t bark?
Doesn’t this guy know when you pull a hate crime on yourself you eventually get caught.
I don’t see any evidence this guy did it himself. Just because some people have doesn’t mean he did.
Mastic Beach is relatively rural for NY. I hope this isn’t one of those where the ‘victim’ did it .. the dog’s not barking seems peculiar.
I hope they catch those who did this.
What first got my attention was the boat and TWO of his cars. Whoa. How many cars does he have? And the doggie is a pit bull yet. Holding my nose on this one.
The only people that would do this kind of thing are far too busy trying to score sudafed and cook meth than to spend their time and money on this brand of stupidity.
There was a muslim woman in our town that came out to her car with a yellow post-it note on it. It had printed in big block letters like a 3rd grader would scrawl and said something like “mUSLim GO FrOm AmEriKA”
And it was also written in flowing Arabic with proper diction and structure. The last I heard was that the police were “investigating” it. Pretty obvious - and I imagine to be PC they didn’t do anything to her.
TAWANA TOLD THE TRUTH!
Hard to believe such racist neanderthals still walk among us....
What’s wrong with the N-word, I watched that stupid Django movie and that was the word of choice. The movie was made by a liberal deviant too... must have been liberals who defaced the property...
That's a lot of spray painting to get one's message out to the homeowner. Usually the fence will suffice since it's a spray and dash crime. But a fence, a boat and two cars? Spending that much time walking around the guy's yard, somebody must have been pretty confident they wouldn't wake up a dog or be seen by the home owner or neighbors or vehicles driving by......
I hate to think that of a reservist but it does sound contrived. The literal dog that didn’t bark. Maybe worry over the first instance led to an exaggerated second instance in a wrongheaded attempt to deflect suspicion?
Sherlock Holmes would deduce something from the curious incident of the dog in the night. That doesn't mean this guy did it himself, but the entire vandalism incident is unusual in its stealth combined with thoroughness.
I would strongly recommend the police investigate his garage and trash for a can of red spray paint.
