There are plenty of divisions in a nation of over 300 million people, from Democrats versus Republicans to Pepsi versus Coke. But most importantly is the one between cat lovers and dog lovers.

-snip-

Dogs are still America's pet of choice with approximately 43.3 million households owning one or more dogs. Although the state with the highest percentage of dog owners is Arizona, with 47.9 percent or approximately 1.7 million households including a dog, the state mammal is the ringtail cat.

Cats are America's second favorite pet, with more than 36 million households having at least one feline resident. The state with the highest percentage of cat owners is Vermont with nearly half of all households including at least one cat. Their state mammal is the Morgan horse.

One very nice female had four kittens under the table one night.

Years ago, when I lived in a Houston suburb, my daughter brought home a sweet, female tabby cat with blue eyes from the Swim Club. The following week, my other daughter brought home a large, lanky, Siamese cat from the 7-11.

My husband pitched a fit and prevailed upon me to give one of the cats to my neighbor for his co-worker who was suffering the loss of her cat. The blue-eyed tabby was chosen. He was to pick her up the next day.

While working at my sewing machine, I heard a sound under my feet. I looked down, and that blue-eyed tabby had given birth to 2 kittens. She hadn't even looked pregnant.

The next day, my neighbor came over to pick up his cat, and I told him that he couldn't take her yet -- she'd just had kittens and he'd have to wait 6 weeks, or he'd have to take the whole family.

"No," he replied, "I'll just take THAT one," pointing at my big, male Siamese. My mouth dropped open, speechless, and my husband handed over my favorite cat!

That sweet, blue eyed tabby gave birth to one "Siamese" and one solid black kitten under my sewing machine. We kept the Siamese looking one, and we owned the tabby for many years. However, she had wanderlust and was only sweet and affectionate when she was pregnant. Otherwise, she was aloof and arrogant and absent a lot. When she was cuddly and nice, we knew there were kittens coming.

SOME dogs stink, but most don't -- particularly if you give them the occasional bath. My Golden Retrievers never smelled, unless they had found some deer, or rabbit, poop to roll in.

OMG, I miss my Max who died of Pancreatic Cancer in Feb.

Although I’ve had the honor of working with people who had therapy dogs
I must confess I’m drawn to cats. Not that I don’t like doge. I’ve never been a dog owner. I’ve shared my life with two cats, one at the rainbow bridge and one meowing for me to feed her.

I think to open your home to an animal, whether its a dog or a cat, you need a big heart and lots of love. I would never date someone who didn’t like either dogs or cats. They become your best friends and all they ask in return is love and of course, a full food bowl. I’m grwreful to live in a world that has such wonderful creatures in it. When ever I feel blue I’m kitty loves me. She’s my best friend.

And I better feed her now

Thanks for sharing your story.
I am not a “cat lover”, but seem to have always had them, except for five years in Europe.
In the Philippines I have been deluged with them, now watching some feeding off of my leftover dinner.

We’ve had a succession of rescue dogs and are angling for another. The animal control officer is holding a dog that was horribly abused pending a criminal prosecution of the owner. The dog is okay but has been left pretty scarred and frankly beat up and ugly; broken bones that didn’t heal right, a rambling gait and some permanently missing fur. They thought he was unadoptable but we want him.

No cats for me, I spent over four decades working with unintelligent, self-centered prima dona’s who thought they were the center of the universe. I don’t need another one.

Dogs have an owner,
Cats have a staff.

you wrote: “cats make a nice stew after they’re treated a bit with a heavy duty meat tenderizing mallet.”

Our local Chinese restaurant doesn’t even bother with the mallet...

Both are great and each have their own personality. If I had to pick between the two, I would choose a dog. My favorite dog, a big, loveable German Shepherd, died last year. It was harder on me than I thought it would be. I miss him very much.

I also had a favorite cat a few years ago that behaved in many ways like a dog. In fact, he was a lot of fun, very active and seemed to enjoy playing with our dogs. It was very sad when he just up and died for no apparent reason one day.

Pets can be a blessing and can provide companionship. I swear they can even express love if you treat them right.

A past in politics? Or pimpin’? Actually either would fit. That’s sad.

My students know how much I love cats. I have four, three of which are Siamese, and the other is a HUGE Maine Coon. The students often give me gifts and cards with cats on them. One of my favorites is a plaque that says, “It's my cat's world. I'm just here to open cans.”

Who knows what the Sunni Kenyan does with his dog.

Dogs shouldn't smell, unless they roll in something putrid.

My neighbor switched from a high-quality dog food back to a low-cost grocery store brand after her daughter stopped working at a pet shop and she could not longer get discounted food. Within just a couple of weeks the dogs started smelling; she switched back to the good dogfood, and voila, no more stinking dogs.
