I first encountered the ghastly neologism “selfie” only a few days ago. It should die as quickly as it emerged. Unnngh.

Well, Yahoo paid $1.1 billion for it.

For the word, or for cats to photograph themselves?

This is my first such encounter. I pray it is my last.

But I pray for the English language and communication in general daily.

I guess I am doing a “prayie...?”

I equally dislike “brekkie” (breakfast) and “ressie” (reservation).

You're prolly right. (My most hated non-word).

I’ve seen the first, but not the latter. Unnngh. “Vacay” is another loser.

“I equally dislike “brekkie” (breakfast) and “ressie” (reservation).”

Is that something you just made up?

No for Tumblr, a site that is a huge collection of selfies.

Oh, I see. In a muddled sort of way. I think I’d seen “Tumblr” somewhere, but had no idea what it was.

No, not made up. I have friends in the UK and Australia who regularly use brekkie. Ressie is something I often see on vacation-oriented websites from UK contributors.

It like looking in a mirror. You take a picture or pictures of yourself with a digital camera and then look at it while it’s still in the camera’s memory.

The one that makes me want to tear out my hair is “cray-cray” (or, as we know it, crazy). I can barely make myself type it.

Well, this is from an Australian paper.

After all, in Australia English usage is even more informal than here in the States: Her Majesty’s subjects in those parts are “Aussies”, those about 1000 miles to the east are “Kiwis”, we’re all “Yanks” (sorry, to inform those of you from the Old Confederacy), Brits are “Pommies” (or “PB’s” — I leave you to guess what unflattering word B stands for), the bloke who picks up your trash is a “garbo”, and the supermarket founded by a kinsman of the old American five-and-dime-store magnate is invariably called “Woolie’s”.

I doubt we can stamp it out, but perhaps we can manage to confine “selfie” to the land of Woolie’s and garbos.
