Shock poll: Americans prefer dogs to cats — by more than 30 points

To cleanse the palate. I was going to do another post on the disappointment that is Rubio and how the “American workers can’t cut it” quote from his aide looks even worse in context, but neither of those topics depressed me enough. I needed something more eeyorish, something to make me despair about the judgment of the electorate at large, not just a bunch of Beltway RINOs who aren’t even smart enough to pander to the right constituency. And then, thanks to PPP, I found it.

I can accept defeat on this question but I can’t accept a landslide. Every day, on various topics, I find commenters tweeting “America is finished.” Only now do I realize that they’re right.

ideo

No daylight between the RINOs and true conservatives there, my friends. This is why we lose elections.

The partisan split is surprising. Not the Republican numbers, but the Democratic ones:

rep

I thought there’d be a stronger feline showing among both Dems and women. Nope. Both top out at 26 percent. In a world of partisan gaps and gender gaps, the population errs on this one uniformly.

In fact, unless I missed something in PPP’s crosstabs, there’s only one demographic that puts cats within double digits of dogs. It’s landslide after landslide when testing for sex, race, ideology, geography, even vegan/vegetarianism. Only one group makes a contest of it. The free-thinkers, the contrarians — the young adults:

age

Gay marriage, pot legalization, opposition to intrusive government, and cats (almost). Second look at the brightness of America’s future?

Update: On second thought, Jay Cost figured out a way to make me sufficiently depressed about Rubio.

It is hard to distinguish Rubio's approach on this from *exactly* what everybody expected Charlie Crist to do …

Maybe it’s the wisdom that comes with age...you just can’t take a walk with a cat!

Bzzzzt! Wrong. I can walk my cats on a leash, and several of them will go for a walk with my wife WITHOUT one.

57-19? Really? Many nursing homes and ‘extended care’ facilities have cats on site for the residents. It would be nice if shelters would pick upon this and expand such programs...the lives of many kitties could be spared.

The difference between cats and dogs...I think this explains it pretty well

My mother used to use a baking soda & water paste to remove the smell. Can’t remember if that worked.
White vinegar mixed in with the soap and water helps.
I’ve got a similar problem, although they do pee on almost everything in my basement. I’ve got 9 cat pans positioned all over, not sure if some are missing on purpose, or just missing. My husband bought Nature’s Miracle, and not sure if that works, cause I’m still cleaning up every day. If I figure out who’s doing it, I swear I’m going to throw them out the door. We live rural, woods, they can fend for themselves. Not a high traffic area, just raccoons and foxes to deal with...

Sorry to hear that. Sometimes the problem is terminal.

We had a problem a couple years ago with outdoor strays. We live remote and have become a dumping ground for peoples pets. Most of them don't make it a year because of the predatory critters around us. Dumping pets has to be the most sadistic thing a human can do.

With outdoor strays we encountered a problem with a rash of marking behavior. It took about a month to resolve with adding kitty litters near the areas (windows) where the indoor and outdoor would meet. One product we found was very effective in cleaning up the marking. We used a combination of a Black Light and PeePee Gotta To Go to get control of the situation.

This helped us to track down and remove all traces of the marking. We also use one plus kitty litters in the house. We have four cats and five litters. This seemed to work to deal with the stray animal encounters.

The outdoor cats will trigger a hierarchical change in behavior in the indoor cats. In our case that was a rash of marking.

One TV Show on Animal Planet has helped in understanding cats. Google or Bing My Cat From Hell. Cut through the craziness of the owners and you will find that Jackson has some very good advice.

Good Luck.

Cats are nice, I had cats all my life until a couple of years ago when they started making my eyes itch.

Dogs, on the other hand, are AWESOME! I hope I never have to live without dogs.

Back when my living circumstances were different we had multiple cats. Often, we’d take an evening stroll and the cats came too, sans leashes, as we were on a farm. One in particular, the older of the pack, would meander off by himself, and situate himself a little ahead of us, and he would yowl and yowl at the top of his lungs...as if screaming...*I’ve had enuf of this...let’s go home. NOW!* And if we got ahead of him, he bound like a gazelle in the tall grass and start yowling again.

Part of this *pack* was a fluffy guy who loved the snow and he’d follow us out the door and walk in our footprints. He’d follow us out of the yard when we X-C skied and keep to the tracks from the skis to ease his walkie. I was on my skis and he jumped in my path...I tried to avoid him and fell and dislocated my wrist. Oh well.

Good memories....mostly. ;)

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEELL we have added another to the menagerie since last we posted to a Kitty Ping thread.

Walked into one of the major chain pet stores over in whatchamacallit Valley to pick up some dog kibble for the ancient ones, and they had a doggie rescue going on. That was a week ago Saturday. There on the floor of one of the cages lay this wierd looking dog that was obviously part Schnauzer, and the good Lord only knows what else.

I said to Mrs. RQSR “I want that dog”, and turned to walk out of the place before I had him. Last thing we need is another dog. Mrs. RQSR said to me “I want that dog”. I thought “Oh no”.

We cancelled all the other shopping destinations for the day, and took that dog home.

We’ve had all the usual bad things that happen with a new critter the first few days, but now the dog acts as though he owns the place, and we are freeloaders.

Everything is fine. He gets along with the cats well, and with the other indoor dog. He obviously had a good home at one time, but something happened I’m certain was not his fault, and he was dumped.

So now we are up to four dogs again, but as I said before in other kitty ping threads the other three being extremely old will be going to the great doggie park in heaven soon. We keep them as comfortable, and loved as possible until that day.

In staying with the theme of this thread we are compelled to state our preference of either cats, or dogs I s’pose, and that would be cats over the dogs, but we do love them both.

Potential ‘Cat From Hell’ candidates...there IS a reason; you just haven’t figured it out yet. :-(

I agree. It can be down right frustrating and destructive all around. Our cats are indoors and three of the four we adopted from abandoned cats on our property over the years. It is a very touchy thing to introduce new members to the household.

When they finally make their place in the home they have no desire to go back out again. I just wish people would quit abandoning their animals.

FAR too many people abandon their animals when they pass that cute 'kitten/puppy' stage...those people are insensitive, animal-abusing bast*rds; in my humble opinion. I care for them, but I do not appreciate getting stuck with their tab.

I live near a mom and pop pet store, which I shop in. a few weeks after Easter the shop is full of rabbits who need homes. People buy bunnies for Easter and they get rid of them. It’s a shame.

I have a friend who rescues those rabbits and finds them good homes.

Btw, I’m a cat person. I had a cat who is now at the rainbow bridge but she peed on everything too. I had two boxes for her. She would only use the box once. Had to use a clean box, if it was dirty, she would use the floor. Te carpet, the bed, anywhere she liked.

I too. I like male cats, but also female dogs. The opposite everyone tags each species as when discussing, or advertising, etc.

I don’t get the animosity of some people toward 1 of the species. I like them.

Sorry on the pic as I don’t know that procedure, and although I was learning about it at one point when Kodak declared their bankruptcy they sold a division of their works to some outfit, cancelled out the program of theirs we had to download from our camera to the ‘puter, and I can’t use my camera for that purpose now. I have to purchase a new one, or find out how to get the program back with they who purchased that from Kodak. It’s all very frustrating to this ‘puter novice.

I believe the best bet for us is to get a new camera not involved with Kodak that we can deal with whomever we want whenever we want. It’s a shame as the little camera we have took very nice pictures, and was simple enough for us disinterested types to use.
