Recall: Natura Pet Food Recall

It has happened again, Natura Pet Food, owned by P&G, has issued yet another recall.

From a press release issued by Natura Pet Food, the company is recalling all lot codes, all sizes, all UPC’s of Innova, Evo, California Natural, Healthwise, Karma, and Mother Nature pet foods and treats.

Natura Pet Issues Voluntary Recall of Specialized Dry Pet Foods Due to Possible Health Risk

Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

These products were packaged in a single production facility. During routine FDA testing, a single lot tested positive for the presence of Salmonella. There have been no reports of pet or human illness associated with this product. In an abundance of caution, Natura is voluntarily recalling all products with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014.

The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States and Canada. No canned wet food is affected by this announcement.

Do they slip off the paws? Will they work on a carpet?

I had bought booties for my 14 yo GS but they kept on falling off or he’d pull them off. I then used horse bandages for a while but was concerned about cutting off his circulation. My dog needs help getting up (degenerative myelopathy) his back legs slip when he tries to get up. Right now I think he enjoys me helping him get up, he gives me that look “help!”. He refuses to walk on a bare floor. I have throw rugs everywhere, like patch work.

I’m kinda hoping to be able to restore him a little bit of freedom.

I started feeding raw meaty bones well over 18 years ago, and have never looked back. Finally found the right way to feed so I could have healthy dogs, with no illnesses, cruddy teeth (except maybe the canines, if you feed table treats), fleas, stinky breath, yeasts, ticks, or other common health problems.

Raw fed dogs do not get sick from raw, and there is a reason, but if you don’t do your homework, you won’t ever understand why processed fed food dogs do die from it.

It is the crap (like clay, beet pulp, etc) they put in kibble to slow it down through their intestines, which then keep the salmonella multiplying till it overwhelms them. They are trying to keep the dog’s poop reasonably normal looking and acceptable to us.

But it isn’t, really, if you think about it. It stinks, just sits there & doesn’t degrade, while a raw food diet poop crumbles away without much smell, into a crumbly white powder after a few days in the sun.

The crap they put in the kibble keeps you from seeing the goopy diarrhea that would normally occur from feeding them left-over grain junk that dogs cannot digest.

The manufacturers know you won’t tolerate constant diarrhea from grains dogs do not have the enzymes to digest, so they add stuff into the kibble to slow down whatever concoction they have made from the leftovers after harvesting, in the dog’s intestines, giving the salmonella a lot of time to multiply and destroy.

A healthy dog, fed a species appropriate diet has no problem with salmonella, or other stuff he might find in wild kill, road kill, or decayed carcasses in the woods.

Their digestive tracts are totally different than ours, and are equipped with powerful acids and enzymes that can deal with stuff our lengthy convoluted intestinal systems can’t. Theirs are way much shorter, and totally different than ours. A raw fed dog has much smaller, less sticky & stinky poops, that easily degrade without endless scooping.

Any dog, no matter how little or big, is happier, healthier, and less expensive, vet-wise, if he or she is fed a raw meaty diet.

Please know that I am now pushing 70 years of age, am not interested in arguments, and really do not give a flying fig what you choose to feed your pets. You either pay good money for a species-appropriate diet, or you pay up the wazoo to the vets.

Your choice, and do not bother me with crank comments. I won’t respond. I am too old and cranky to argue with people who don’t care to research factual truth, but want to argue with me with uninformed opinions.
