Police are searching for a man who skipped out on a $100 dinner bill, then brandished a gun at witnesses who tried to stop him in a Gaslamp Quarter parking garage.
The incident occurred about 7 p.m. June 5, when the man in a brown suit racked up a $108 bill at Toscana Cafe, San Diego police said. He walked out of the Fifth Avenue eatery when he was done, telling the hostess he was just going to smoke a cigarette on the sidewalk. But he left without paying his tab.
One of the managers followed him to Lou & Mickey’s restaurant down the street but lost sight of him. The manager returned to Toscana, but decided again to go after the freeloader, police said.
The manager again found him near Lou & Mickey’s, but the suspect had changed into a gray long-sleeved T-shirt, black pants and a dark beanie cap. He was carrying a tan and brown bowling-type bag.
The manager confronted the man, who attacked him with pepper spray.
The thief then ran into a nearby parking structure on Sixth Avenue and K Street, trailed by several witnesses. As they neared, the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at them.
Video surveillance showed the suspect changed his clothing once again after he fled the garage. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, black shorts, black socks and carrying the canvas bag. Police later recovered his older clothing under a car in the garage, as well as a replica .357 revolver pellet gun.
He was described as white, 30 to 40 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, about 150 pounds, with a tan complexion and brown hair cut into a short, military style.
