Baby's Parents Arrested After He Climbed Out A Window As They Slept
The daughter of legendary former Yankees manager Joe Torre was being hailed as a hero Wednesday, after she caught a 16-month-old baby that had fallen from an awning in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
As CBS 2s Hazel Sanchez reported, everyone in the neighborhood was talking about how the baby was dangling from the awning of the Sweetie Frozen Yogurt shop at 9104 Third Ave. in Brooklyn, when Cristina Torre, 44, came to the rescue. She happened to be walking along Third Avenue near 91st Street around 10 a.m. Wednesday when she saw the baby boy Dillon Miller hanging precariously.
All of a sudden, Dillon fell, and Torre, with her quick reflexes, was able to catch the baby in her arms before he hit the ground.
Witnesses were completely stunned.
The child was screaming, crying, and they were attending the child, and they were, like, panicking because they didnt know who the child belonged to, a man said. So then a lady said the child belongs to one of the people who live in that apartment.
Denise Vento of Bay Ridge said Torre had the experience to know what she was doing.
She was positioning herself, and she works with preschool kids, and she kind of knew from what he was doing; that he was going to come down, Vento said, and she was in the right place at the right time, thank God.
She was amazing, said Kristen Bramsen, and I went over to her and I said, Youre a hero! You saved the baby!
Police said Dillon crawled out of his familys second-floor apartment window above the yogurt shop. The air conditioning unit was set up in the window.
Dillons family was grateful following the incident.
The babys fine. The babys OK, the boys grandfather, Dennis Miller, told 1010 WINS Holli Haerr.
Family members said his parents were not aware when the child slipped out of the window.
They were sleeping or something, and he crawled through the little space and was playing around, said cousin Sandra Miller.
Neighbors said the accident really came as no surprise to them.
I knew it was going to happen, said neighbor Dalia Amr. Shes that kind of a terrible parent only her. The husband is really good, but she doesnt take care of him that much.
The parents Sam Miller, 23, and Tiffany Demetria, 24 have been arrested and charged with child endangerment. Their three other children ages 2, 3 and 5 were taken into the custody of Child Protective Services.
The little boy who fell was taken to Lutheran Medical Center, where his condition was reported as stable.
Quoted in a Newsday report, Joe Torre said he was very proud of his daughter for her actions.
Joe Torre was a catcher . . . taught his daughter the basics, no doubt.
What was the movie?
Manning: Look at that- Each photo costs a fortune to suppress. And then, naturally, they pop up on the net.
Abe: Oh, Lord- He's smiling in this one.
I can’t remember. I just remember a recent movie where one of the main characters caught a kid who fell out of a window.
Or a Nelson Cruz.
What’s she running for?
***Shes that kind of a terrible parent only her. The husband is really good, but she doesnt take care of him that much.***
Terrible parent? Hey - why shouldn’t today’s womyn do anything but satisy her own wants and needs at the expense of everything else? If that boy was getting in the way of her beauty sleep she probably should kill him...just call it a late-term abortion...she has a ‘right’ you know.
Her neighbor clearly made a sexist comment, and should be punished.
Now that’s cold.
One of my sons was like this when he was a baby. You could not take your eye off him. He could undo locks, pull out the safety plugs from outlets, undo safety latches on cabinets, undo his car seat... It was six months of complete slavery and terror. Finally his brain caught up with his Houdini act.
I’m sure glad that woman was able to catch the kid.
Not relevant.
In the book “Ball Four” there was a comment along the lines of “there are no known pictures of Joe Torre, the lens would melt on the camera, every time”. Joe is a great human being, but I laugh over that line, and warn folks who try to take my picture of the same possible outcome ;)
I still remember The NY Post headline from that playoff game “Chuck Brainlauch”. That was on the front page, I think the back page was “Bonehead”. Tough crowd ! ;)
I’ve often wondered about such a thing happening in NYC, with almost every window having a window a/c unit...not to mention the fire escapes!
*and in Brooklyn, too.
Now that I think of it, the other headline was “Blauch Head”, not Bonehead.
Way to be a jackass.
That’s it.
