Anger mounts after Facebook's 'shadow profiles' leak in bug

Friday Facebook announced the fix of a bug it said inadvertently exposed the private information of over six million users when Facebook's previously unknown shadow profiles accidentally merged with user accounts in data history record requests.

According to Reuters, the data leak spanned a year beginning in 2012. facebook shadow profiles

The personal information leaked by the bug is information that had not been given to Facebook by the users - it is data Facebook has been compiling on its users behind closed doors, without their consent.

A growing number of Facebook users are furious and demand to know who saw private information they had expressly not given to Facebook.Facebook was accidentally combining user's shadow profiles with their Facebook profiles and spitting the merged information out in one big clump to people they 'had some connection to' who downloaded an archive of their account with Facebook's Download Your Information (DYI) tool.

According to the admissions in its blog, posted late Friday afternoon, Facebook appears to be obtaining users' offsite email address and phone numbers and attempting to match them to other accounts. It appears that the invisible collected information is then being stored in each user's 'shadow profile' that is somehow attached to accounts.

And this is why only my dog has a Facebook account, and only to check on other Mastadors!

Baloney. Anyone can find info on anyone else with just a name. If anyone has not checked spokeo, then do so. There is all kinds of info on there unless you request it to be deleted. If people want to know what team I support, which pictures i like, which recipes I like, whose funnies I like, then go for it. I do not publish private info anywhere. I have my birthday on FB but not the year. If people want info on someone, they can find it. Believe me, I have done it. Years ago, there was something posted here about a public figure who used another name. Found her real name in about 15 minutes. Guess that is why I am good at genealogy.

We have a very active group from FreeRepublic at Facebook. I get updates there when we are having problems here. People tend to be a little more polite to each other but Obama gets the same treatment.

Obama called “war criminal” & “hypocrite of the century” in Irish Parliament

This just one link from today.

The add fun is you can upset your liberal friends and family while posting to your conservative friends and family.

Facebook is Evil.

Anyone who uses Facebook had better not be bitching about the NSA, because they’ve been giving it away.

What’s the difference? They can get our ISP address from our posts on Free Republic and then get any information they want from our internet providers. The same goes for any email we send or anytime we use a smartphone. Link it all together and voila.

I don’t use Facebook since the “general public” and others do not have a “need to know”.
Yet now some employers will turn down candidates that do not have a Facebook profile.

Just doing a little subcontracting for the NSA.

Well... it's time every one wised up a little.

ALL emails and phones are being tracked. All EMAIL SERVICES are now in the process of 'updating' their 'interfaces' and included in the small print is the fact that by accepting the new interface, you agree to let them search all your emails with 'behavioral analysis' software.

I just went through it with YAHOO and it's right there in the acceptance agreement.

Got to agree with you. I am good with genealogy too.. Found a 5th cousin that I was already friends with who lives 2 blocks away! I don’t like what FB did. I have a FB page but use it to keep up with what the kids are doing, other than that I don’t share personal info either and stay away from politics. I find most stuff posted on FB is junk anyway.

I must have very conservative friends and relatives because I learn from what they post. Think a lot of them are even more conservative than I and that is saying a lot. All anyone has to do is type in someone’s name and there are loads of hits from business to personal. When I want to find genealogy info, I type in descendants of the oldest name I have. I am constantly amazed at the info out there. If people think FB is the only place to find personal info, they are mistaken. Just type in a name and sites will pop up with their age, places they have lived and names of family members. I have done it trying to find someone. Genealogy has taught me so much about being a sleuth, FB is my way of keeping up with friends from 1-12 grades, college, plus ones I know now. It is a way of seeing photos of kids I do not get to see or have never seen. I get info on weddings and lots of other events.
