Chelsea Clinton No Longer Vegetarian, Never a Vegan

Chelsea Clinton No Longer Vegetarian, Never a Vegan 13 Comments 2 BY MICHAEL DESTRIES JUNE 19, 2013 CATEGORIES: EATS, HEALTHY LIVING, VEGAN TAGS: CHELSEA CLINTON.

After 18 years of vegetarian living – a lifestyle that helped in part to inspire her dad President Bill Clinton to drop meat – Chelsea Clinton has revealed that she’s given it up. Actually, she surprisingly hasn’t been one for years.

In an article for NBC’s Rock Center, the 33-year-old details what inspired her at an early age to make ethical choices – and adopt a diet that was friendly towards animals.

“One spring day in my sixth grade Life Sciences class at Booker Arts Magnet Elementary School in Little Rock, Arkansas, we read two articles,” she writes. “The first concerned the cruelty toward cattle in slaughterhouses and the second was about the detrimental effects of red meat on your body. By the time I got home later that day, I had resolved to give up red meat, to take a stand against animal cruelty and a stand for my health (it seemed rather simple to my 11-year-old self).”

Sharing that she now eats meat (which is interesting considering the setup above), Clinton goes on to say that she has “tremendous respect for people who make consistent ethical choices in their lives – people who not only don’t eat meat, but who also don’t wear fur or leather and don’t use products made from animal derivatives.” In particular, she singles out Stella McCartney and her ethical fashion label as one example deserving of praise.

Digging back a bit, I found an April interview Chelsea did with Free Republic Parade Magazine that revealed she’s been mixing in the meat since age 29.

Free Republic: Rumor has it you’re a vegan. True?

Chelsea: I was never a vegan. I gave up red meat when I was 11 because in my seventh-grade life science class, we read two articles about red meat, and I think probably I needed to be a little zealous about something. I gave up all meat when I was 13. Then when I was 29, I woke up one day and craved red meat. My husband, who is an inveterate carnivore, was thrilled. My father is quite famously a vegan, and I am thrilled by that.

So – now you know. Cross one Clinton off the veg list.

No, I mean she was never a vegetarian. She didn’t just wake up one morning and decide she was hungry for red meat. she claimed to be a vegetarian to please the crowd she was hanging around (Hollywood) she always ate red meat. I don’t believe a word of it.

Linguistic activism. “Vegan” sounds like something from another planet, and most healthy people don’t care about any contrived difference between that and a vegetarian.

At some point, veganism became synonymous with strict vegetarianism (as opposed to lacto-ovo vegetarianism). Before that, veganism was a lifestyle, not a diet. Vegans avoided all use of animal products, to include leather, down, etc.

I can’t keep up with this stuff, nor do I want to.

Checked this on my ‘give a damn’ meter...didn’t even register.

Why in the world would anyone care about Ms. Clinton’s dietary habits? What possible impact could this have on the myriad problems facing this country?

Sounds like she grew up. I know a lot of people who do this silliness in their college and 20’s. She just did what millions have done before her. I don’t believe this needs to be reported on though.

why is Chelsea Mezvinsky never referred to by her married name? Why is she in the news, seen in public, etc. but never with her husband?

A lot of professionals decide to use their maiden name for jobs. She most likely signs her Christmas Cards with her married name. I don’t think she was even interviewed for this story so her husband would not be with her anyway.
