Youve got to hand it to Walt Disney Pictures. They took what was basically an extinct genre the pirate movie and spun the multi-billion dollar Pirates of the Caribbean franchise out of it. Take that, Cutthroat Island!
The House of Mouse is hoping to continue that lucrative trend of genre resurrection with Pirates director Gore Verbinskis latest offering The Lone Ranger, a theme park-like Western grab bag starring Armie Hammer as the titular hero and -- you guessed it -- Johnny Depp as his Native American partner Tonto.

Does it matter? They have “Star Wars” now. It’s basically a license to print money.
They could kill that goose trying to get to the golden egg too.
>>The last western I saw at a theatre was Unforgiven
That’s the only Clint Eastwood movie since 1973 that I didn’t see at the theatre. I was pushing Poseidon missiles around under the Irish Sea when it was in theatres. (OK. Unforgiven and Bridges of Madison County, but was Bridges a real Eastwood movie?)
To me he looks like a South American “native” medicine man.
That throws me off enough.
I might be just a poor schmuck and not a bigshot Hollywood producer, but that doesn't sound like a winning formula on the screen or as a business model.
It has a prostitute in it. Thus do I know just from the previews it is not a kid’s movie.
Nothing is ever made to inspire kids with the right motives or actions anymore.
“Once Upon a Time in the West.” Best western ever...great stars.
Yes...and one of the best soundtracks ever.
I remember a Saturday afternoon in the ‘50s when there was not a young boy to be found playing outside in my neighborhood. Everyone was at somebody’s house (only a few had a TV) watching the first TV run of “The Legend of the Lone Ranger.”
If they had done it right and not caved to every PC impulse, this might have paid off handsomely for them indeed.
Johnny Depp is claiming partial Indian heritage of indeterminate origin.
Has anyone on this thread actually seen the movie?
With his faithful Native American partner, Tonto..."
>> Sounds "gay".
Smells like a remake.

My 2 best “modern” westerns aside from Clint’s are “Open Range” and “Tombstone”.
Logic and reason don't play well with a lot of people here.
They have that covered. Believe it or not, some Indian tribe inducted Johnny Depp as a member earlier this year. At least someone in Hollywood was thinking ahead.
I’ll probably wait till it comes out on Redbox and rent it for a dollar. It takes a lot for Hollywood to convince me something is worth going to see at the movies anymore.
I can’t stand to even watch the ads for this clunker. The Lone Ranger in a three piece suit!!?? And a mask? Looks like a Wall St. banker.
“Open Range” is my absolute favorite. I love “Unforgiven”, etc, but nobody plays a cowboy as well as Robert Duvall...:)
Favorite scene: When Robert Duvall wakes the chloroformed deputies and sheriff up with a nasty violin concerto and cowboy-booted tap dance...:)
Brilliant!
Not unless they stop whimpifying any white male that shows up on the screen.
