Food and eating cultures differ around the world. In many countries people have a kind of meat that is tied specifically to their culture. In Peru locals eat Guinea pig, China they eat cat, Italy, horse, and strangely many westerners also choose to drink the mammary products of bovines, cow milk. Foreigners have often looked on with disbelief as "strange" animals are consumed by other cultures.

However in our ever more globalized world the pressure of outside influences on those native dinning habits have begun to be felt. This is particularly true of dog meat and in a quest to learn more about this increasingly polar topic we decided to take a trip to the Moran Market east of Seoul to see the practice for ourselves.

Dog meat consumption has occurred in many parts of the world, in Eastern and Western countries alike. In Korea the practice of eating dog has been common for centuries. The meat is eaten year round, most commonly in summer time. It is believed by many that eating dog can bring virility and can cure many ailments. Jin Kim grew up in Korea and throughout his childhood eating dog meat was a normal practice. “My family would often eat dog meat during summer trips to the country to see my grandparents.

>> It is believed by many that eating dog... can cure many ailments.

For example, the practice can be 100% effective in curing insomnia from a neighbor’s barking dog. :-)

not nearly common as when it was poor country. Younger Koreans would rather have exotic foods like pizza and KFC and burgers

As long as the critters are dispatched humanely, I have no issue with this.

I had a “pet” sow we named Pee Eye Gee. She was a good sow, and several of her offspring were quite tasty, too.

Then it was her time. So be it, we all must go.

I say this with my best buddy of 13 years sleeping on my feet right this second. His new co-resident Spazz is also here.

We North Americans seem to have forgotten that dogs are only an adjunct to our lives.

They are no less a source of meat than rabbits or squirrels. Hunger is a very strong force. So acquired taste can be as well.

I do get tired of the western media lecturing the rest of the world on their diet. If they want to eat dogs, horses, whatever... have at it.

Might we not have a bit of an objection to Indians telling us that we shouldn’t eat beef because cows are sacred?

Let silver go below $7.50 and ounce, gold below $750 an ounce and oil go up to $200 a barrel and you good folks right here in the US , who live in cities, will be barbequing your pets too.
