A fungus-like pathogen, first discovered just five years ago, now is wreaking havoc on juniper trees in the U.K.
This is the first time that this mold, called Phytophthora austrocedrae, has ever been seen in Europe. It threatens a tree that's native to the U.K. and important to ecosystems there. Junipers are known for the berries, which give gin that piney flavor. Most gin companies don't get their juniper berries from the U.K. nowadays, ABC News reports, but the infection may cross onto mainland Europe.

One of the good side effects of last summer’s drought. Trees shut down in the drought to conserve energy and have reserve energy for fruit this year. Everything is hanging low under the weight of fruit this year.

I am surprised this juniper disease isn’t immediately being tied to global warming. However, the disease is related to the blight that caused the Irish potato famine. That blight was helped by cold wet conditions in 1815..dubbed the year without a summer..when global temperatures cooled likely as a result of the eruption of the Tambora volcano the year before.
I guess I better buy the really big Bombay Sapphire when I go to the store today.
