A top health official has spoken out against a 24-hour “dial-a-drink” service, which has been granted trading permission by a council.

Booze Bury is set to begin deliveries this week after being granted trading permission by Bury Council, even though the firm thought its chances of license approval were “slim to zero”.

The council said it could not turn down the company’s planning application while supermarkets in the area are also able to sell alcohol around the clock.

Dr. Peter Elton, the director of public health at NHS Bury, said: “It is very dangerous for people to be able to buy alcohol and have it delivered to the door 24 hours per day.” …

Dangerous? I suspect that hardcore alcoholics would never use a service like this.

Much safer for those drunks to get on the road and go up to the store to get more alcohol.

I think it’s a great idea! If I can order wine online and have it delivered to my door.... how is this any different?

Really--safer both for the drunks and for people they might run over if they tried to drive to the store.

Some time back I saw a video of a man trying to buy beer at a store, who was so drunk already he kept falling down inside the store. Perhaps he was just acting, but it looked real. This service would be a godsend to folks like him.

Well, there is that classic quote from Benjamin Franklin:

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

I think that is not an exact quote, but does reflect the gist of what Ben said.

I thought your post was indirectly funny. BTW, Franklin didn't say that.

My grandparents owned a liquor store immediately after Prohibition was lifted....in a small little WI town near Green Bay. My grandfather ALWAYS provided delivery service....cases of beer, wine, hard liquor, pop. His store was the only game in town for nearly 60 years!

No, but the Bible does say this:
He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; / And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.

Psalm 104:14-15

Why would this be a bad idea? It would keep intoxicated people from getting behind the wheel when their supplies start running low.

I think it's an excellent business model and I wish them the best of success with it.

In all things, moderation.

I think Barry Goldwater made some exceptions to that in his acceptance speech at the 1964 Republican convention.
