In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
auspices (AW-spi-seez) noun
1. Patronage, support, or sponsorship.
2. A favorable sign.
Example sentence:
"In March, Serbian and Kosovo officials met under EU auspices for their first high-level face-to-face talks."
---Kosovo Parliament Rejects Move to Cancel Talks; Agence France Presse (Paris); May 5, 2011
Etymology:
Plural of auspice, from Latin auspicium (divination from flight of birds), from auspex (bird watcher), from avis (bird) + specere (to look at). Ultimately from the Indo-European root awi- (bird), which is also the source of avian, ostrich, osprey, oval, ovum, ovary, egg, and caviar. Earliest documented use: 1611.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
So sorry to hear, Gabz-I remember when Cinderella was a wild puppy, and you told us about her escapades.
I lost my old Kitty boy last winter-he just slowed down and stopped. We were told when we got him that he showed signs of a bad head injury when found, and was fragile, but he still lived to be about 15-16 with good care.
Husky girl is nearly 15 now-old, even for that breed, but she is in good health and happy. If only our pets could live a lifespan closer to our own...
Oh no! How scary for you all
America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi! |
Sorry to hear about Cinderella - we lived for so long without a dog until our daughter adopted a rescue last year - now he has free reign at our house when he comes to visit...
Under the dubious auspices of
One lunatic group-or three
The emperor gets an earful
Of how their world should be
He has now become affected
With new scandals every hour
Nixon-like and clinging to
The door of his ivory tower
He must pay attention to them-
Or they might get really pissed-
Cut off the money and support
If they should feel dissed...
Sorry about Kitty-boy, but glad to hear Husky girl is doing well.
No more big dogs for us, and when we do get another we plan on making sure to get it used to riding in the car from the get go.
I was brought up with pets and livestock-I’ve tried to be without a dog twice-when my 13 old German Shepherd died, and after we lost the old Chow MrT5 got as a puppy-not successful at all, either time. And I could never live without a cat for more than a few weeks...
My husband is allergic to most animals - horses cause him to wheeze and dogs/cats usually end up causing a very quick harsh reaction with red, itchy eyes, nose, etc. But he has had very little reaction around our daughter’s dog - we’ve been shocked to be honest. His sister came to visit and her dogs caused a quick reaction - but if he hadn’t had such a time around animals we would have had dogs all along too!
A+ for you!
I love big dogs-but the large pure breeds that have been around for a few hundred years without too much interference by breeders seem to live the longest and healthiest. So Huskies, Malamutes, Chow Chows, etc will continue to be my canine companions.
Small dogs are sweet, lovable and cute, but they are like one of my cats-a different type of companion animal.
My very favorite dog is the German Shepherd-a breed less than 100 years old-but their lives are so short, and they have a lot of problems from overly selective breeding for show.
But they are phony scandals, according the the big zero and his minions. A+ for you.
That is a little known Astrological sign between the Water Bearer & The Fish ....
Could be the breed. I get wheezy and stuff around cats and dogs. But my Sheltie was selected partially cause that breed is hypoallergenic.
Maybe it is the breed of dog your daughter has-or maybe his chemistry has changed. My first husband was allergic to cats-but not dogs. I chose my dog-and cats-over him as companions to live with, but he wanted me to marry him, so he sneezed and did Benadryl for a few months, while my cats went about their normal routine.
After awhile, he didn’t even get red eyes when he slept with one of them next to him-it was weird. The allergist at Wilford Hall said he had likely become acclimated to the pet hair from all that exposure. He was never bothered again in nearly 20 years of marriage...
By small dog, I’m talking about cocker spaniel or beagle size. I guess I should have said smaller, or medium sized. No more labs or chows for me.
Thank you!
Phony, my ass-Nixon said he wasn’t a crook, too...
There is a woman who is a Brit on the next road who has two hounds she calls Harriers-they look like taller Beagles to me.
You clever boy. A+ for you.
