CLEBURNE A well-known Cleburne attorney and chairman for the Johnson County Democratic Party was taken into custody Monday morning after trying to bring a handgun into a courthouse.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office said Bill Conover, 53, also appeared to be drunk.
The news stunned local attorneys and political figures in Cleburne.
"I was just shocked... shocked," said Henry Teich, chairman of the county Republican Party. "I really hope it was just an oversight on his part."
Conover didn't respond to requests for comment.
The county Democrats told News 8 he resigned the chairmanship on Monday afternoon. In a statement, party secretary LuAnne Leonard wrote:
"Today was an unfortunate mistake, coupled with poor judgment. The gun was located in a book that was in his attache case. He forgot the gun was there and inadvertently took it into the courthouse."
Leonard said she didn't know if Conover had a concealed handgun permit.
Conover is a past assistant state attorney general and well-regarded attorney. His family has long roots in the area. A local high school football field is named after his grandfather.
The sheriff's office says Conover will be charged with public intoxication and bringing a firearm into a prohibited place.
My bet he was gonna plug somebody.
usually these attorneys are well-known and are just waved through security...
I wonder what made them think to search him?
Drunk with a handgun in your briefcase ...what could possibly go wrong?
It should be illegal for lawyers to own guns. But everyone else should be armed. Might cut down on the number of lawyers.
And we have a District Attorney in Travis County(Austin) convicted of DWI and refuses to step down because she knows a R would be appointed in her place. Her arrest videos also show her being quite the “handful” and issuing veiled threats like the standard “do you know who I am” crapola.
Fat ,drunk and democrat is no way to go through life, son.
Did you miss the part about him being the counties DemonRat chair?
“The gun was located in a book”
I guess it wasn’t a law book. Or just another unread item.
Think the proper problem here is that the court house is a prohibited place to bring firearms. Seems like you’re far more likely to be robbed there than anywhere else, and being disarmed is a bad idea.
I guess it wasnt a law book.
Wrong, it was a hollowed-out law book.
Regards,
Care to tell us what state this is? I, for one, have never heard of Cleburne.
With a concerted effort under way to convert every citizen into a criminal, how else do you regain control?
Texas.
Thanks.
He got caught THIS time, but how many other times did he get away with the crime?
