No one is truly “stuck” with an OS they don’t like. One can always change the OS.
I would strongly urge anyone looking at a new computer to take a serious look at Mac as my son tried to get us to do.

Even applications which do NOT use Windows APIs can and do fail after “upgrades”. And no these are not applications which are using some undocumented or unsupported feature.
Win 8 may have some good stuff under the hood but from the outside for a power user it sucks beyond belief.
One thing that is coming to light right now is MS has decided not to fully support MIDI under Win 8 which, albeit, will never have as many users as desktops but is used by millions of people in all aspects of music who have not YET been forced into the Apple world.
More trouble than you think with win 8.
Even in these days of UEFI and signed bootloaders? I’ve not yet had to confront this but figure that one day I will have to. I think for now things can mostly be coerced to work but maybe not always?
I’m a little late to the party, but a week ago I was forced to buy a new laptop and, of course, it has windows 8. Toshiba also put their own desktop on as a tile so all the familiar things from windows 7 are available too. I’m actually starting to like it since multi-tasking has never been easier. I don’t think I would like it in a tile only environment, but this combination is working out very well for me.
