If you die en route, do they play Stardust when you’re ejected?

I have always thought that a cheap one-way trip to Mars was feasible...they should get Robert Zubrin to plan the thing.

A better option, although very expensive, could involve building a space station whose purpose was to go from Earth orbit to Mars orbit.

Liquid fuel would power the launches to build the station. Some form of Ion thrusters would be good for getting the craft from Earth to Mars. The station would need to be nuclear powered and it would be best if it had a small rotating habitat ring for artificial gravity.

A short burst of liquid fueled thrust to start the station on its way and then switch to Ion power.

On Mars water could be turned to rocket fuel (hydrogen/oxygen)to power small vehicles to orbit to link up with the station. Nuclear power would be a must on Mars.

The test rats will comprise the first flight—the intended survivors will be on the second flight. In any case, the arriving second flight should see some impressive chaos and anarchy upon arrival. Thinking Donner Pass.

Projected cost: $6 B for a four-man team

Solution: sell one seat via a lottery, $1,000 per ticket, figure $500 M net of cost

Sell three other seats outright for $500 M each (possibly governments will buy these seats)

Sell naming rights for $1 B

That’s $3 billion

LAUNCH twice

>>>spread the overhead. Indeed, if you launch more than two, you’ll be making money.

One way? Expensive way to commit suicide.

I very much doubt the technology for a colony on Mars will exist in a mere 9 years.

They will however film all their training of amateur astronauts for a reality show, the real point of this I’m sure.

I can’t comment on the actual feasibility of a near-term colonization of Mars, but I will say.... I hope it IS a truly private, “capitalist” consortium that does it.
