Free Republic | 8/16/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 08/16/2013 12:42:15 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

It is inexplicable to me what my brain remembers and what it doesn’t. I am told that I do not get enough REM sleep, and that interfers with the transfer of short term memory to the long term memory.

I don’t understand though why the parts remembered are stuff I would rather forget, and stuff I would like to remember is as lost as a dianmond ring flushed down the storm drain and out to sea.

Still you would think that the name Bastardi would have stuck somehow or other.LOL. A memory expert on Dr. Oz, says that your brain tends to forget the ordinary and remember the unusual. Under that theory, I would think that the name Bastardi would have stuck somewhere, but Nooooooooo. I remembered the name Joe.

Is there a more ordinary name than Joe? LOL It is a mystery. Also a frustration, because I used to be able to remember almost everything without half trying.

Wow. Thanks for the link. Truly outrageous, and it was meant to be, imho.

Here is my post on that thread about the police action against the tomatoes:

The term “sustainability,” as pointed out here on this thread previously is used by both farmers/plant growers, AND those who are seeking to Control Everything.

“Sustainability” IS a buzzword for the UN plan to crowd the population into conclaves of rabbit hutches, and destroy private property rights.

Part of the plans on the drawing board of Agenda 21 is for the power elite/UN to control ALL means of growing food. The police action described here is part of the customizing of the yokels to the actions of the police in their program(s) to control.

Anyone out there tinkering with grafted tomato plants? Seems to be quite the rage this year...

I used this recipe off the web. Don’t remember the site. It tastes like a very mild honey.

CORN COB JELLY – 5 half pints

12 large ears of corn
2 quarts water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 package powdered pectin
Sugar (1C sugar to 1C liquid)

Cook corn; cut kernels from cobs and store for another use. Measure 2 quarts water into a large pot; add corn cobs.

Bring to a hard boil for 30 minutes. Remove the cobs. Strain out the corn bits or not.

Boil liquid down to 3 1/2 C. Stir in sugar cup per cup of liquid. Stir in lemon juice and pectin. Add a dab of butter to prevent foaming. Bring pot to a rolling boil again for one minute.

Remove from heat. Ladle hot corn cob jelly into hot sterilized jars. Adjust lids and bands. Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

Psst, I froze cobs we’d eaten the kernels off of and used them. It’s all in the family so it doesn’t matter especially with it being boiled to death. ;)

I usually get my Marion plants from Wal Mart or Lowes Bonnie Plants stock their shelves with them.

Yep that’s kinda along the lines of what I posted. Sustainability sounds good, and innocuous, but like most bureaucratic stuff from Washington and the UN will actually lead to the opposite of what the name implies.

I saw that in catalogs. I have not had any experience with them, and didn’t have much desire to order them either. I just want to plant heirlooms, save the seeds, and plant them again.

I clicked on the link and I didn’t know that happened in Arlington. Hope they don’t raid Johnny.

Our sheriff has a drone. I read on that link that tomato plants give off a signal sort of like Marijuana and that’s why the SWAT team went there.

Look, my Mortgage Lifter tomatoes are heirloom seeds and those things aren’t cheap. And, it takes a lot of effort for me to grow seeds the way I have been doing, and if the cops hurt my tomato plants, I will cry for my tomato plants and sue the cops’ butts off.

My Sesame plant looks strange with its lovely green leaves and they better not come after that. Most of you have lots of this and lots of that, but my plants are individually grown and pampered and babied. Losing one is a major disaster.

I’m still saying prayers for the squash plants the borers killed.

Thanks for sharing. Very good way to get a little more out of your corn harvest before pitching the cobs. I always just cut the corn off the cob and eat it with a fork.

Other wise I get it all over my hands and face.

I just want to plant heirlooms, save the seeds, and plant them again.

That was my line of thought until I got a better understand of what grafting was all about...turns out it isn't quite what I thought it was.

“I’m going to get a dward brown fig tree, an olive tree, lemon and orange. They’ll all grow in large decorative pots near the front door.”

I’m thinking - I’m putting food plants on the deck in containers and leaving the dirt garden alone. There are two rose bushes in the dirt and the big pot with the Sesame flower plant sitting on the dirt. Seems to me I could put big pots with these dwarf fruit trees in the dirt garden. When they started putting on fruit (if they ever did), then cover them with net to keep out the varmints. That would either work or it wouldn’t.

We had fig trees in our yard when I was growing up, plus peach trees and plums. That was in deep east Texas. If you have a fig tree, you will have wasps. I won’t do fig tree for that reason since my space is small.

No, but when I read about the sheer numbers of veggies being produced by these plants when used in tandem with self-watering systems like Earth Boxes (50-75 1-2 lb. tomatoes per plant); then I believe I have to give these a try. (I thought grafting was all about getting two or three different kinds of tomatoes off of one plant, but I was wrong. It is to produce a more productive, disease-resistant plant.)
