Box Office Mojo ^ | 25 August 2013 | Ray Subers

On a very slow late-August weekend, Lee Daniels' The Butler easily held on to the top spot at the box office. We're the Millers also continued to play well, while all three new nationwide releases opened to less than $10 million.

Overall, the Top 12 earned an estimated $91.6 million. That's up 10 percent from the same weekend last year, when The Expendables 2 led with a weak $13.4 million.

With good reviews and strong word-of-mouth, The Butler fell 31 percent to an estimated $17 million. In comparison, The Help dropped 23 percent at the same point in its run two years ago, while 42 dipped 36 percent in its second weekend in April. Through 10 days in theaters, The Butler has earned $52.3 million.

I know some of you are disappointed that the movie is number one again. It will take some time for Americans to get to the theaters and see this movie. It will fizzle out eventually. I would say in about six weeks it will be done with the theaters. I think it won't make more than 150 million in the United States.

Repeats? Does this mean somebody actually went to see it more than once?

I hate that this piece of pure agitprop made a dime.

There are tons of movies that I wish didn’t make a dime. Some conservative ones too....lol. Only one really....the rest are great.

I am a huge movie fan and can separate-for the most part-my hatred for lib stars. Movies have sucked lately. I will sit through the premieres and be stunned that 3/4 of these movies get the green light

Who cares. That is irrelevant anyway. Number one movie two weeks in a row.

Just another piece of noble-blacks-as-saints propaganda featuring a lying race-baiter.

Can’t say I understand why any conservative would be excited about it.

I have never heard of this movie, what’s it about? Heck most of the movies on the list I’ve never heard about or seen. I’ve been to four movies all year WWZ, Red2, Pacific Rim, and I forget the other.

I would rather send ten bucks to Alan Rickman directly, and watch his scenes as Reagan on Youtube, because that’s the only part I want to see.

The fact that people are going to this movie shows just how bad off this country is.

What’s really sad is that the people who go to see the movie will believe it is factual. Most, if none, will ever know the truth that it is fabricated.

And fabricated to inflame: the actual butler was the son of a hard working but poor black family, and NOT the product of the rape of his mother by a white man (who then shoots the butler’s father to death when he tries to intervene). Those things didn’t happen and there was no reason to add them except to inflame black grievance passions.

Also, the butler’s wife was not pressured into an affair with a powerful white; the couple was happily married for nearly 60 years, I believe, until their deaths.

This was a disgusting example of taking what could have been an interesting, sympathetic story about a man who worked hard and triumphed against adversity and turning it into an ideologically motivated, race-baiting lie-fest.

This is so sad because the movie could have been beneficial to black families - instead, like you said - it will inflame the race wars.
